Case study: Aldbrough pathfinder project
Aldbrough hydrogen storage, a joint project between SSE and Equinor, has the potential to be one of
the world’s largest hydrogen storage facilities providing 320GWh storage in time to support UK’s 2030
hydrogen target. In advance of this, the SSE's Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder project integrates
hydrogen production via grid electrolysis (with renewable power via a PPA), cavern storage and
49MW hydrogen to power generation using Siemens SGT 800 turbine. By taking an ecosystem
approach, the project has been devised as a "proof-of-concept" for the green hydrogen production to
power value case, delivering valuable system integration learnings that will underpin the development
of hydrogen to power at scale as well as cost benefits that can be applied more widely. The project is
critically dependent on the development of the hydrogen transmission system and would benefit from
‘Fast Track Consenting’ introduced through British Energy Security Strategy.
Perhaps Islandmagee could also benefit from 'Fast Track Consenting' introduced through British Energy Security Strategy
