Seasonal storage
To manage seasonal swings in heating and electricity demand, salt caverns offer a promising option. Northern Ireland may have strong potential in this area at
Islandmagee near Larne. This site is capable of storing approximately 1,173 GWh,
and of delivering 61GWh/day of hydrogen (DfE’s data suggest only 570 GWh of hydrogen demand being supplied from storage in 2050 in the Diverse scenario,
well below Larne’s capacity)
