TopCatz - speculate being the operative word. The only thing that'll lift the share price here is if/when they ever start divesting a part of their holdings & redistributing it as special divis. That's how TEK was sold to investors by Clifford. And he implied (some time ago now) that this would begin to happen within the short to medium term. But it's not how it's worked out since.

Fela96 - obviously entirely up to you. But perhaps you'd care to enlighten us all as to why - by your own admission - SMT continues to be your largest investment, whilst at the same time you say "If it is indeed true that BG ask to be judged over 5 years, then SMT is a failing investment trust, correct?" Are you a contrarian investor who doesn't mind holding "failing investments"? Are you expecting/hoping for a bounceback? Or is it something else completely that we've all missed?

Think we've done the 5 year performance argument to death now! Investors either believe that in the long term SMT will outperform. Or they don't. If they're holders, but they don't believe it'll outperform, why continue to hold? Simple answer would be to move their money to something they have more faith in. I'm not saying SMT will outperform going forward, as nobody can know that. Not even the fund managers. But I'd suggest if anyone thinks the last 5 years mean the next 5 will disappoint, the simple answer is to sell.

Fela96 - as I've said before, you can use stats to back up pretty much any invetsment argument under the sun. Trustnet uses IT Global as SMT's benchmark: hTTps://www.trustnet.com/factsheets/T/be08/scottish-mortgage-investment-trust-plc/. Over 5 years, SMT has outperformed this, but over 1 & 3 years it hasn't. Look over the past 10 years though and SMT will have fared much better. It perhaps mostly depends on when you invested as to how jaundiced a view you take!

Dontshootme - we explained things equally, just differently! In terms of the US, I wouldn't call it a bull market. The Dow Jones has been fairly rangebound these past 12 months, between around 28700 & 34700. It's at the higher end right now, but I wouldn't bank on it staying there. Potential (albeit remote) US debt default was looming up until last week. So the markets rallied once that particular can was kicked down the road for another 18 months or so. The Nasdaq and S&P are around their year's highs. Again no doubt buoyed by the debt ceiling being lifted. US data re: labour costs & the number of added jobs is giving slightly more mixed signals currently. Possibly still some signs of overheating. In which case, we may not have reached peak US interest rates just yet. If further rises prove necessary, some commentators predict a relatively shallow US recession later this year. Which would likely reverse some - if not all - their recent market gains. A case of watch this space for the time being.

Fela96 - no-one disputes SMT's recent under-performance. And you can always select a timeframe to back up any claim of under/over-performance. Over 5 years, SMT has indeed underperformed the Nasdaq (which isn't its benchmark anyway). However, look over 10 years & the picture is very different. Ignoring dividends for now, SMT's closing price on 7 June 2013 was 165.6p. And the latest is 689p. That's an increase over 10 years of 416%. On 7 June 2013, the Nasdaq closed at 3469, versus 13229 currently. That's an increase over 10 years of 381%. All goes to show, there's some truth in the old adage of "lies, damn lies & statistics"!

But SMT isn't - and has never intended to be - a Nasdaq tracker.

Quite. This week's "big announcement" will have little impact on the share price (unless the FDA unexpectedly throws a spanner in the works).

Dontshootme - Motley Fool says "Baillie Gifford purchased 8,728,172 AMD shares". It doesn't say they're held within the Scottish Mortgage fund. Plus, we're talking Motley Fool here, who aren't always - how shall I put it - the most reliable analysts.

Lambo222 - it DOES NOT "all rest on the FDA decision next week". There might be SOME share price reaction, but the recent rise suggests the market's already assuming the FDA will wave things through to the next stage. So priced in to some extent. In which case, once the dust settles, all we're looking at next week is another long waiting game.

Unless of course, IMM's "funding worries" lead to a "total wipeout". Oh no, now you've got me all worried again.

OK, let's just cool the petty squabbling & get back to what this board should be about, shall we? Which, by the way, is SMT. The point has now been made about Nvidia. Different posters have different views on the subject. Time to move on.

Given yesterday's fall in NVIDIA's share price, let's hope SMT reduced when Senator1 & I first suggested it (i.e. before yesterday). They could already have bought back in over 5% lower.

Nvidia fell 5.68% yesterday.

Dontshootme - "Sell a chunk of NVIDIA and then buy what exactly?" Well, they could always buy back into Nvidia following its fall, which looks fairly inevitable before too long.

Baf3 - it’s already widely assumed (so probably priced into the market) that Microsalt will pick up some decent new orders. And its proposed IPO on AIM has already been RNS’d. So neither of these is likely to lead to a significant TEK SP re-rate IMHO.
