As far as I am concerned, I have made no profit on a stock until proceeds from all sales exceed the cost of all purchases. Until that happens I am simple increasing or decreasing my average price on retained shares with buys and sales. I could if I so wished go into profit at any time by selling enough shares to more than recoup my current low average price per share.
