For the first time in six months, all 14 sectors monitored by the Lloyds Bank UK Sector Tracker expect their output to grow over the next year, up from 13 in December.

According to the Tracker, improved optimism was driven by expectations of weaker inflation over the next 12 months. The number of businesses citing that they expect inflationary pressures to weigh on output this year fell to a 10-month low (5.3 times the long-run average vs. 10 times the long-run average in December).

NatWest has today reported a jump in annual profit for 2022, as the boost from successive Bank of England rate rises outweighed provisions for troubled loans in the cost of living crisis.

NatWest reported pretax profit of £5.1 billion for the year, up from £4 billion the previous year and in line with analyst forecasts.

The state-backed lender announced a 10 pence per share final dividend and an £800m share buyback.

As AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould noted: “Barclays also has overseas operations and economic conditions in other parts of the world where it does business aren’t exactly rosy.”

This may suggest better, if not brilliant, news for more domestically focused rivals, Lloyds and NatWest, particularly when you delve further into the numbers.

Barclays performed worse than expected in the final quarter of 2022 as higher expenses and an increase in bad loan provisions weighed on performance.

In the fourth quarter operating expenses increased to £4.0bn, £200m more than analysts predicted.

The bank also set aside £498m in impairment costs in case of bad loans. This compared to a release of £31m the year before.

Inflation in the UK is falling faster than experts expected in a sign that the cost of living crisis is poised to unwind quickly over the course of this year, official figures out today reveal.

The rate of price increases in Britain dropped to 10.1 per cent last month, down from 10.5 per cent in December, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Inflation has now been running in the double-digits for five straight months, eroding household spending power rapidly. Number from the ONS showed real incomes fell 4.3 per cent in the three months to December, one the steepest drops since records began two decades ago.

The UK’s top banks are set to unveil record profits in the next two weeks after sharp interest rate hikes boosted the lenders’ coffers last year.
