I recently put a small sum in L&G's Battery Value-Chain ETF recently, and was disappointed to see it seems to ignore vanadium, so I decided to send them the following email:
"I'm looking to enquire as to whether the Battery Value Chain ETF is looking to invest in the vanadium sector? because demand from the electricity and renewable energy industries for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) is increasing fast, and should explode over the next few years because vanadium is better than lithium for large scale stationary energy storage applications. In turn this will cause the vanadium commodity prices to reach new levels. [At present, almost all vanadium demand comes from the steel, airline, and car industries, so the new green energy sources of demand are not taken into account in historic graphs].

Companies in this sector would include:
- Vanadium battery manufacturers, such as Invinity Systems (IES.L), Cellcube, and Protean Energy.
- Vanadium producers who mine the vanadium used in these batteries, namely Bushveld Minerals (BMN.L), one of the largest producers outside of China, who are ramping up production very fast, and they also own stakes in VRFB manufacturers called Enerox and Invinity.
It's also worth noting that Eskom (South Africa's govt run electricity company) have secured loans from the World Bank to build massive Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across South Africa. "Phase 1" consists of 7 BESS projects. The tender process for this has recently concluded, and the news as to who has won is expected in January. Bushveld (BMN.L) are part of a consortium looking to win some if not all of those 7 projects. And it is looking almost certain they will be part of the winning bid for 1 or 2 of the projects, because 25% of the projects must help the South African economy, and Bushveld is in South Africa, whereas most of the other bidders are situated overseas.
I believe that VRFB technology and innovation will transform the world over the next few years in ways that most people do not realise yet. This in itself creates a huge investment opportunity, which arguably deserves its own ETF. But, failing that, it should at least feature in the Battery Value Chain ETF that you have."
I intend to send the same email (or possibly a slightly better version seeing as this was off the cuff) to other providers of Funds, Trusts, and ETFs focused on Green Energy, Energy Storage Batteries, and the like soon.
Please send me your suggestions, and I'll get contacting them : )
