I am not sure what is happening out there...the market seems to be so volatile...and L2 pressure either way (in many cases) is either disguised or seems to much less bearing on the sp. than market sentiment (which seems to be simply a lottery). Maybe it is part of the fall out of the massive in/out flows of money in NRK, maybe it is the way of things now in the global economy, in which we, the PI's, are just passive bystanders. One would like to think that a reduction in base rate (which now seems probable) would help AL. (1) because it will reduce the risk of default by mortagees; (2) it should ease up liquidity. But what do I know...I will watch with interest.

take over approach
There are 2,399.82m shares issued; the sale of the retail broadband/voice business to Tiscali was said to be for £210m before exceptional items, the September 2007 Statement said there was £35m in the bank before the sale; the residual business (including Freedom4) has yet to be sold, demerged or taken-over. Say as a wild 'gestimate' that there is £236m in bank now and say (to keep the maths simple)there is a further £39m to come, the cash back to each shareholder could be (£275m divided by 2,399.82m shares) = 11.46p. Of course if the value of the retained business is more than £39m...
I am emotionally attached to Pipex, it was my first ISP back in 1998. Its real reputation was in the business sector (including 10 Downing St). My read of the Rule 8.3 notices is that the shorts were closed on Friday, but I maybe wrong. There were massive trades, mainly sells, but the sp rose. Freedom4 will enable businesses and their employees access to broadband in urban areas without need for a telephone line, whether at work or at home. The news section on the company's website reveals the statement in late Sept 2007, where it is said cash will be returned to shareholders, and details will be provided in the 4th quarter.
Cash and cash equivalents £35.2 million (£37.8 million at 30 June 2006). • Broadband and Voice Division sold in September 2007. • Potential de-merger of Pipex Wireless business to be initiated. • Options for the remainder of the group to be explored. Peter Dubens, Chairman of Pipex commented: “The performance of the remaining Group businesses remains robust, with continuing growth in our hosting and domain names businesses, our Business Services division well positioned to win additional business, and our wireless broadband venture representing a significant long-term growth opportunity. The Board believes that the outcome of the strategic review announced today will maximise delivery of shareholder value and enable a timely and efficient return of cash to shareholders. Further details of the actions now being initiated will be communicated to shareholders during the course of the fourth quarter.”

WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. It is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, which is also called WirelessMAN. WiMAX allows a user, for example, to browse the Internet on a laptop computer without physically connecting the laptop to a router, hub or switch via an Ethernet cable. The name WiMAX was created by the WiMAX Forum, which was formed in June 2001 to promote conformance and interoperability of the standard. The forum describes WiMAX as "a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL."
"In a joint venture between Pipex and Intel Capital, Freedom4 is to build on wireless services currently being offered by Pipex in Warwick and Milton Keynes by launching in Manchester. Mike Read, chief executive of Freedom4, said: "Over the next year, we believe that Freedom4 will become the name associated with broadband wireless internet and look forward to the next stage as our services are rolled out in Milton Keynes, Warwick, Manchester and other parts of the UK." http://finextra.com/fullpr.asp?id=17490 http://www.focus-solutions.co.uk/templates/focus/page.php?id=52&clickid=52 I managed (on a punt) to buy yesterday at 8.02 am at 45.9 following the positive Trading Statement posted yesterday morning, which included 'For the first time, Focus has traded profitably in the first half of the year. The business has performed strongly, continuing to make good progress in line with our plans. Both turnover and profitability are expected to be significantly ahead of the corresponding period in 2006 with sales revenues increased by at least 35% to over £4 million. At the operating level, we have generated a profit before exceptional costs, as compared to a loss of £0.3 million last year which reflects the considerable improvements we have made to the business over the last two years. Overall, the first half performance is consistent with market expectations for the year as a whole'. However I have since looked in a little more detail at this 'nice' Leamington Spa company and seen its impressive client base and product range. Shares Telegraph rate it 'buy'. It maybe that the years of financial/intellectual investment and its impressive client base are beginning to bear fruit. The company is to post its interim results in early December 2007. I think now that I may await the results before deciding whether to sell.
