@Zebra - gg20 = 20°C per 1000m, so assuming ave of 25°C at surface, that would give 65°C at 2km. gg35 would give 95°C at 2km - a critical difference for hydrocarbon maturation. Suitable Guercif graben sediment sources are up to 8km thick, and have been shifted up and down over time by tectonic forces.
Much sediment worldwide has a good organic content, but because of a poor geothermal gradient, just never reaches the depth required for a 'kitchen', so there is insufficient maturity for oil or gas windows. This is the case for much of the Atlantic coast of Morocco, as you can see on the map - like the rest of the Atlantic margin, it has high organic content deposits, and structural traps, but not enough heat at the right depth to mature hydrocarbons. The big boys started drilling there in the 90's, found nothing, and gave up. Hence the mantra "there is no gas/oil in Morocco", which Paul is busy proving wrong.
