Brexit worries continued to dog the £(1.2907 mid session) which provided a boost for London big cap stocks.
The ftse climbing for the 4th session & a 2 month high was up 70 at midday in contrast to the CAC & DAX bogged down by trade concerns.
Bcon was hammered ($6487) when the SEC delayed a decision on whether to approve EFT status till Sept. Movers were the Pru up
c.4% on Interims ahead by 9%, Glencore u/c on record H1 profits but PP/Betfair tanking 580 on poor outlook in H2. All share, 250 & S/caps moved higher, Aim off just 2 points while the 100 added 58 to (7777) and ytd the 100 has snuck up 1.2%
In the US stocks were marginally lower as 2Q earnings season winds down as over 80% of the 500 have now reported. updates at Q3 sometime in late Oct'18. Dow closed down 45 (25584) the Nsdq putting on 5 (7888) and 50 shy of its all time high. Some disappointing nos from Walt Disney, shares down 2.5% and Snap inc (user decline) took the shine of an otherwise solid days trading which saw Tesla fall 2.5% on doubts about financing his offer to delist. Energy & industrials were mostly lower on the sagging OP. McDonald's topped the up board, Disney the down board.
On the trade front the US completed a list of $16bn of 25% tariffs on China imports which to date amount to $50bn with another $200bn in the pipeline.
Beijing have lined up $110bn of tariffs on US imports.
The Bears have logged onto the S&P 500 price/sales chart which is mirroring that of 2000 but is now 2x as expensive and adds fuel to their view that the cont upward move for stocks is unsustainable. Q3 nos will be good but not as good as Q2, so predict market watchers. Late on more trade tensions with Russia won't help mrkts not that they are much bothered.
In Asia trade worries, a lower oil price and a stronger yen pulled back Tokyo off 44 while SH gained 50 on demand cont strong in the local economy despite inflation nos coming in higher. Consumer and cyclicals to the fore. HK was up 266 on local factors late on.
