US close, nos etc..5 Apr 2025 06:53
Fear gripped financial mrkts as the sell off gathered pace during the afternoon. The Dow had slumped 2052 points near the close its bigest one day loss since the covid era wiping c.$2•5tn off Wall St. After China imposed tariffs on all US goods in response to Trump's swingeing across the board tariffs the indexes took a turn for the worse in the late afternoon.
The CBOE volatility index an options based gauge of stock investors anxiety about the mrkts short term outlook rose as much as 15 points to 46, it's highest level
for nearly 5 years as investors fret tariffs will disrupt global economic growth, lead to higher prices for goods and services and lower company profits.
Equities remained at the centre of market turmoil with the Nsdq looking set to
confirm a bear mrkt, down 20% from its record high. The Nsdq has sunk nearly 2000 points since Wednesday and could test its 100 DMA low of 16,260.
Unfortunately US trading partners have limited options in their trade war with Trump other than to sue for peace as they lack the firepower and political will to slug it out. A negotiated peace seems the best way forward. India hit with 27% tariffs is already negotiating and will not impose tariffs of their own. The European Union plans to go ahead with retaliatory action after Canada laid out plans to fight back against unjustified US tariffs imposed on Canadian goods. Hopefully Starmer will bide his time before seeking concessions.
A Labour Dept report showed the US economy added far more jobs than expected in March (228,000) but Trump's tariffs could test the markets resilience in the months ahead. Noone in the market was in the mood to hear good news.
Meanwhile the S&P closed at its worst for the day off 1124 points while the blue chip Dow index slumped 2231 with Nvidia & Boeing leading the declines. Only 2 companies posted gains on the Dow 30 (Nike & HD) while Boeing, Travellers & 3M led the laggards. Msoft ($362) replaced Nvidia ($95) in the no2 spot of bigest global companies by mrkt cap on its 50th anniversary as a public company.
