Ukraine/US close & nos.2 Mar 2022 04:54
Diplomatic moves are being ratcheted up as shelling of civilian areas continues unabated in an effort to waste the area and break the will of the people. With tanks just 15 miles from the Border, Boris Johnson has flown to Poland to meet Europen allies to discuss the next move fom the Western alliance.
How long can Europe stand idly by and watch the unfolding bombing and killing of the Ukrainian people? These are innocent people. Wringing our hands and asking Putin to withdraw doesn't cut it for many people, who rightly or wrongly feel Europe is full of rhetoric and passionate words of encouragement but needs to put boots on the ground and face up to the Robber Baron Putin.
Unfortunately for the hawks Europe is not at war with the Kremlin, whose warmongers are looking East towards China for sustenance and political backing. No fly zones are out of the question for fear of shooting down Russian jets and anyway as only the UN can agree to no fly zones and as Russia has a veto....end of.
Putin's downfall must surely come from within. The ordinary Russians already menial living standards will inevitably lead to more poverty and hardship as sanctions bite and the ruble loses its purchasing power. The cost of living may be 70% cheaper in Russia than the UK but its hardly a relevant statistic.
To date civilian casualties are low but rising and if resistance continues in Kiev and Kharkiv and a long drawn out guerilla war ensues which is likely to be the case, casualties on both sides will be in the tens if not hundreds of thousands effectively leaving Ukraine a wasteland, should Putin's war machine prevail. Brave Ukrainian men and women are fronting Russian artillery on the road to Kiev, shades of Tiananmen Square in 1989.
In the last few days 100,000 people have signed up to defend their homeland as arms flood into Ukraine. The fear is Russian tanks will encircle Kiev and a lay siege to the Capital and if successful install a bunch of Kremlin hoodlums to run what's left of the country.
Stock mrkts fear the worst with London's ftse closing down 128. Gold is surging higher ($1940) and oil is over $105 as investors fear a quasi Armegeddon scenario about to befall Ukraine and spilling over into Europe.
The Dow fell 180 at open but a dead cat bounce petered out and was heading nearly 700 lower at mid'day. The NYSE has halted trading in Rusky stocks and in London Evraz & Polymetal will be kicked out of the ftse 100. This is the worst start to a new year since 2020 for US stocks and the 4th worst Feb performance in 71 years.
