The Dow opened up nearly 300
but was soon in the red as investors continued the sell off started in Dec. News from the IMF that 33% of the world will go into recession this year dented the positive start to the year.

Shares in Tesla ($107) tanked another 13% despite reporting a record 1•3m vehicles shipped. Cannot believe that Ford which sold 3x more cars than Tesla is valued around $47bn to Tesla's $341bn. Now ranked 19th on the list of the most valuable companies savvy investors have been shorting the hell out of Tesla for over a year.

Apple were sold down to $124 slipping below $2tn mrkt value. Despite falling 55% last year Apple retains its No 1 ranking as the the world's most valuable company ahead of Saudi Aramco (1•9tn).

In Asia the big exchanges ignored the Dow and except the Nikkei (-350) are trading mixed to better. Firmer bullion prices and easing covid infections in some Chinese cities has boosted sentiment among Asian investors. Stocks in Sydney were particularly strong moving above the 7000 mark on back of gains in tech and gold miners.

Talking about another year the Santa Rally fizzled out despite a good bounce early today the leeway was too much to make up. Doesn't necessarily herald a duff year ahead but if your a believer in the 'runes' & casting of spells best stay on the sidelines.

I was really hoping I could retire gracefully Rugs!! Ok it's no hardship I grant you so against my better judgement I'll give it another.....?

All being well I'll see out another year and PAT make 5!

The're are good and bad 'months' on the stock mrkts. Some significantly better than others. For example the stretch through Nov - Jan is a strong one with Sept being the danger month with an overall negative return of 0•80% despite UP years outpacing DOWN ones 41-32.

Most investors would say Oct is the worst month of all for obvious reasons ('29, '08 & '87) but not so, in fact Oct shows a positive return on average of 0•79% (45 UP/28 DOWN).

January records 43 UP v 30 DOWN years for an average gain of 0•85% and of the 12 months of recorded data since 1950, Feb, June, Aug & Sept show negative returns.

If there is a lesson here, Buy & Hold for the long'term is the best course of action. Many will disagree saying that's a punt gone wrong. As ever you pays your money.....but you can't argue with the stats that support the former as the winning strategy.

A happy NY to everyone and here's hoping WA Gold stocks will recover from the poor sentiment hanging over the sector. Much talk that Gold & Silver will outperform this year.

In the meantime all eyes will be on the Fed for signs int rates and inflation will hit a peak in Q2. Non farm payrolls and jobless claims are first up in Wk1.

They can do a New Year's Honours list. OK, I'm not on that one, so I decided to check out some financial ones from 2022. Being a bit of a 'lists' man especially when it involves companies I'm invested with and more so as I have one on the list. I thought it worth a look. I trawled through the 'best' 'worst' 'top' 'bottom' share lists of the 1963 companies listed in London.

After much too'ing and fro'ing
I eventually found a category I felt sure my Co would be represented. I say 'my company' as I'm a part owner first and foremost. Sometimes investors forget that point. Anyways down the bottom almost as an afterthought I found the best small cap list of shares valued between £10m to £500m. Good. Gotta be listed there surely? Hmmm, we'll see.

Now there's no excuse for not listing the 3rd best performer of the year, big, small or whatever cap! They obviously have no idea which company came in at no 3 and I'm not about to tell them. They should fire the compiler or send him to Doncaster. Oops forget that he won't find his way there.

I will complete the full list of year end nos that i followed throughout the year tomorrow, which will round off my year. Anyone wanting to continue will have the 2023 nos to hand.

A miserable year for many ended yesterday and not before time. What initially was a slow start for the share price which prior to the contract win traded between 212 and 335, a not bad performance by any measure got rescued so to speak by the first US contract win of some £22•4m.

This more than doubled the share price to c.745 in Dec. As the year drew to a close profit taking and some top slicing saw the shares settle at 669 for a 209% gain on the year. MSi rose 57 places on the All Share ranking list to no 575/632. While on the Ftse Aim All-Share index stocks fell 31%.

Contract win details are not available outside of the headline amount. For sure its a priority project for MSi and some urgency to be up and running ASAP, so there is pressure on the company to deliver. But MSi have lots of experience so I'm not unduly worried they won't have all the nuts and bolts in place.

How any of this impacts the bottom line is speculative at best but bofp calcs operating margins could be c.25%+ and an eps of 50-60 for the F/Y is not out of the ball park giving MSi a p/e of c.15x at 800 hardly onerous given the Defence division is expected to make the running this year with more contracts in the pipeline.

If MSi continues to reinvest its profits at a higher rate of return this will see substantial growth in its earnings and ROCE. Currently MSi trailing ROCE is c.18% (£7•2m ÷ £40 m) but is expected to grow to c.22%.

An easy way to visualise this is for every £ invested MSi makes 18p profit. Add on increases in dividend payments to shareholders potentially to 12•5p yielding c.1•8% the investment case is a strong one for those seeking a dividend kicker.

Given how investors like to see eps increase annually this will have a positive impact on the sp this year and i expect the shares to outperform. Good to see more investors joining the chat board as many have valuable experiences to share.

Just one and a half trading days left for investors to close the books on MSi for 2022. Maybe some window dressing and final profit taking will drive dealings today.

Excepting any out of the ordinary event MSi will post a remarkable turn around in its fortunes. The £22m contract win with more to follow was undoubtedly the catalyst for the 191% appreciation in the shares this year.

As much as that was 'hoped' for, it certainly wasn't "in the price" and those long'term buyers were duly rewarded. It may turn out to be a bumpy road ahead in 2023 but one I want to be on.

Wall St ended lower after a steep fall mid afternoon took the Dow down 366. Of more concern the Nsdq fell to its lowest point in 2 years closing down 143 and a shocking 35% ytd thanx to a slump in FAANG stock's.

Asian mrkts are a sea of red nos as investors fret about the recent surge of covid cases in China spreading across the region. It might be too late for a Santa Rally this year.

Its an inauspicious end for Asian investors with just one day to close the books for 2022 the Nikkei is down 9%, HK off 16%, Shanghai 25% and Sydney 6%. Pretty much the same story among the smaller exchanges. Only Jakarta and Singapore are in the black, both 4% up ytd.

I wonder whether the Bell family have considered applying for a listing on Nsdq or the OTC mrkts which are more in tune with entrepreneurship than the staid London Stock Exchange?

Worst way a US quote assuming we pass all the requirements one being 300+ shareholders might be a good move or are we too small potatoes?

Apparently it's beyond Lse or Morning Star to accurately record most days trading nos in MSi. Today Lse said c.30k were dealt in MSi and M/Star said 53k dealt. Take your pick. The only way to be certain is if zero trades were recorded and then best double check!

Ok, its no big deal but if they cannot agree on a simple accounting of c.100 trades how accurate are their sp closes likely to be or any other info investors rely on for that matter?

When I was at school either/or answers were not permitted it was right or wrong. Perhaps its the 'mushroom' effect or maybe we are dealing in 'shroom' psychedelic stocks unbeknownst to me. I'm not one for conspiracy theories but 'keep the buggers in the dark' rings a bell.

I jest of course but turning a coin is hard enuff without having to double guess & double check the basics. We know its an uphill battle for pis whom the London market have been trying to get rid of for years either through dealing costs, poor regulation, onerous joining barriers or DIY investing.

The proportion of UK shares held by individuals has been declining, currently its c.12-13% on 2018 figures. The pandemic won't have improved those numbers.

Silly 50 spread though you will be able to deal inside I'm sure.
