Following an early fall of c.200 points the Dow turned up late morning and continued to build on the positive start to the year. By the close the DJI was up 269 (33,973) and the Nasdq posted its 4th straight day of gains adding 197 points (11,403). Advancing issues outpaced decliners by 3•3:1 on the NYSE.
Investors will be looking for evidence that US consumer prices grew c.6•5% y-o-y moderating from 7•1% in Nov.
On the banking front Walls bigest banks are expected to report lower Q4 profits starting with JPMC & BOA. WELLS FARGO is stepping back from the home loans business to focus on investment banking.
GS plan to lay off c.6% of their global workforce this year as deal making declines at its investment banking arm and Black Rock Inc the world's largest asset manager is said to be laying off 500 of its staff in a cost cutting exercise.
Other big board companies reporting on Friday include United Health and Delta Airlines. Ford Motor sped to its 9th straight session of gains as revenues are set to increase this Q by c.13% y-o-y.
