Exceptional work from @kirstenkorosec @Tweetermeyer @AlexRoy144 The issue of what a car does when DMS detects distraction/fatigue is all about Human Factors research. See @DrMikeLenne @NatashaMerat @AnnikaFLarsson
Wow, awesome. Just heard this on a Sunday morning down under. Many excellent points that resonate for me, here are 5 of my takeways…
1) There are enough ways to get injured today, let’s ensure we don’t introduce new risks. Implies we understand the risks. Study the system. Combine road safety thinking & planning with technology development and implementation.
2) Driving monitoring has a role – but efficacy is completely reliant upon how that information is used by the driver and the vehicle. Much work being done on thresholds, warning modalities, etc and how the vehicle should respond to understand how to deliver maximum benefit.
3) Support the driver, DMS and Implementation go hand in hand. Clearly you need a great DMS signal, but you need a great OEM implementation also. Effective mitigation almost certainly different for distraction vs drowsiness.
4) We need to ensure forthcoming EuroNCAP standards are not the bare minimum – otherwise the technology solutions run great risk of not providing the potential safety benefits, and not being accepted by drivers. As @alexroy said, “no BS DMS”. We need to get this right.
5) Volvo announcement re: DMS is great. Moment of reflection. Perhaps the greatest gift of vehicle automation is it got “no BS DMS” into the car and the future benefits it can deliver in non-automated driving to address longstanding risks with distraction and drowsiness. Out.
