0004] The present invention provides a driving assistance system or autonomous control system for a vehicle that provides a method for the autonomous driving system to determine when the driver of the automated vehicle can take a nap (or otherwise be distracted or generally unavailable to immediately take over control of the vehicle) and for how long. The system can suggest to the driver when it would be a good time to take a nap, or per request when the next opportunity is available for a nap. The present invention addresses the desire for a driver or occupant in an autonomous vehicle to take a nap while the vehicle is in active autonomous mode. This system may aggregate information from the internet, road infrastructure, driver monitoring, and from a programmed navigation route, in order to determine when and for how long it would be suitable for the driver to take a nap, while the vehicle is following the programmed route autonomously.
[0019] The vehicle is able to operate autonomously by means of the Autonomous Vehicle Controller (AVC), and the driver will be able to do other things, and not pay attention to the road or to driving the vehicle. The system of the present invention allows the driver to take a nap (or otherwise not pay attention to the road or to driving the vehicle), and the system will monitor the driver and have the ability to wake up the driver when necessary.
[0020] Typically, a driver will only have the desire or need to take a nap on long trips. During long trips, the driver will typically enter a destination into the vehicle's navigation system. In the case of a programmed destination, the system will be able to predict traffic conditions based on the type of roads and vicinity of metropolitan areas. In addition, the AVC has the ability to connect to the internet and receive information about current traffic conditions on the road ahead (such as road construction, traffic accidents and/or the like). The internet can also provide information about special events, concerts, conventions, and other happenings that may affect traffic conditions in the route. Furthermore, based on the time of day, and the day of the week (or year), the system will be able to anticipate rush hour traffic or other more complex traffic conditions. For example, the system can indicate to the driver that there is an opportunity to take a nap in the next 45 minutes. The system can indicate that after 45 minutes, there will be 2 hours of busy traffic that may require the driver's attention. The system can indicate that after 2:45 hours there is a 3 hour window to take a nap.
[0021] The system may indicate to the driver that there is an opportunity to take a nap by means of an audible voice message, or by means of a gauge in the dashboard or on a multi-f
