Described herein is a system and method for performing eye tracking. One embodiment provides a system (100) including a camera (106) for capturing images of a vehicle driver's (102) eye and light emitting diodes (LEDs - 108 and 110) configured to selectively illuminate the driver's eye during image capture by the camera (106). A processor (118) is configured to process at least a subset of the captured images to determine one or more eye tracking parameters of the subject's eye and to determine one or more illumination characteristics of the images. A controller (120) is configured to send an LED control signal to the LEDs (108 and 110) to control the drive current amplitude and pulse time of the LEDs (108 and 110). The controller (120) selectively adjusts the drive current amplitude and/or pulse time based on the determined illumination characteristics of a previous captured image or images.

Toyota is creating a $100 million venture fund to invest in autonomous driving and robotic technology start-ups as automakers increasingly push into the self-driving market, the company announced Thursday.
Toyota AI Ventures, a Silicon Valley-based subsidiary of Toyota, plans to invest the money into early-stage startups that developing “disruptive” technologies in those fields, the company said.

“Auto manufacturers must participate in the startup ecosystem to stay ahead of the rapid shift in the auto industry,” Jim Adler, managing director of Toyota AI Ventures, said in a statement.
The company said the fund is part of Toyota’s mission to help “discover what’s next” for Japan’s biggest automaker. Toyota’s AI venture fund has already invested in 19 different start-ups over the last two years, bringing its total funding commitment to autonomous driving technology to $200 million, the company said.

Utilising autonomous systems for transport safety: On Point with Seeing Machines

Autonomous systems are the way forward in defence, but while these capabilities are coming along in leaps and bounds, it remains clear that the human controllers of these systems are irreplaceable at this point in time.
With many viewing autonomy as the future of battlefields, aerospace and marine warfare, the role human interaction plays with these systems ties not only in with their effectiveness, but creates a buffer for the ethical use of these systems.
