Testing in the US is already back, government are providing free tests again. In the UK at the moment the random airport testing is about monitoring and surveillance. I agree the POC test would be ideal for this with its superior accuracy.

The World Health Organisation have issued a warning surrounding a new 'ultra transmissible' COVID-19 variant.

The XBB 1.5 variant, nicknamed 'Kraken,' is reportedly at its height in the US and parts of the UK, with the WHO's technical lead for COVID-19 Dr Maria Van Kerkhove expressing concern over the rapid transmission of the new variant.

'We are concerned about its growth advantage in particular in some countries in Europe and in the US, particularly the Northeast part of the United States, where XBB.1.5 has rapidly replaced other circulating variants,' Dr Van Kerkhove said at a press conference on Thursday.

'Our concern is how transmissible it is,' she continued. 'And the more this virus circulates, the more opportunities it will have to change.'

Professor Lawrence Young from Warwick University echoed Dr Van Kerkhove's concerns, saying that the new variant should be a 'wake up call' to the UK.

'The XBB.1.5 variant is highly infectious and is driving increased hospital admissions in New York, particularly among the elderly,' Professor Young told MailOnline. 'Waning immunity, more indoor mixing because of the cold weather and lack of other mitigations, such as wearing facemasks, are also contributing to this surge of infection in the US.'

The latest stats for hospitalisations, however, show from the week ending December 11, to the week ending December 18, there has been an 18.6 per cent increase, from 735 patients to 872.

The “highly infectious” XBB.1.5 Covid subvariant will drive the next wave of the virus in the UK and its rapid spread in other countries should be a “wake-up call”, experts have warned.

That looks like it will change, XBB.1.5 variant is expected to take off in the UK later this month and is much more contagious and immune system evading than previous variants… it will be classified as a variant of concern imo…

XBB.1.5 itself evolved from XBB, which began circulating in the UK in September 2022, but which has not been classified as a so-called "variant of concern" by health authorities.

XBB had a mutation that helped it beat the body's immune defences, but this same quality also reduced its ability to infect human cells.

Prof Wendy Barclay from Imperial College London said XBB.1.5 had a mutation known as F486P, which restores this ability to bind to cells while continuing to evade immunity. That makes it spread more easily.

We could easily reach the 30’s on Conditional Guidance alone. It’ll greatly increase the likelihood of international sales, as well as early adopters in the NHS. Then there’s the stroke test, and I believe now with this new variant sweeping the States (and now Canada, UK, India and more) that there may well be another chance for Covid POC.
