Jürgen Nowicki, Executive Vice President of Linde plc and CEO of Linde Engineering, has been actively involved in strengthening ties between Linde and the United Arab Emirates. In 2022, he played a key role in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure to advance green hydrogen and sustainability projects.
This collaboration supports the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050 and its Net Zero Initiative, aiming for carbon neutrality by mid-century. The partnership focuses on four main areas: hydrogen mobility, carbon capture and storage, green hydrogen production via electrolysis, and blending hydrogen with natural gas. Nowicki emphasized Linde’s long-standing presence in the UAE and its commitment to helping the country meet its ambitious decarbonization goals by leveraging its global expertise across the hydrogen and CCS value chains
The UAE’s hydrogen ambitions are not just bold—they’re globally competitive. According to its Hydrogen Leadership Roadmap, the UAE aims to capture 25% of the global low-carbon hydrogen market by 2030, with a strong focus on exports to Japan, South Korea, India, and Europe. That’s a serious play for global influence.
Here’s how the UAE stacks up:
• Production Targets: 15 million tons per annum (mtpa) by 2050. That’s on par with major players like the EU and Australia, and ahead of many others in terms of clarity and scale.
• Hydrogen Spectrum: The UAE isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket. It’s investing in green, blue, turquoise, and even pink hydrogen (from nuclear energy), giving it flexibility and resilience.
• Domestic vs. Export Focus: While exports are key, the UAE is prioritizing domestic decarbonization—especially in hard-to-abate sectors like steel, aluminum, and aviation.
• Strategic Advantages: With world-leading solar PV costs, abundant land, and access to low-cost natural gas, the UAE is well-positioned to produce hydrogen cheaply and at scale.
In terms of net-zero alignment, hydrogen is central to the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. It’s seen as a linchpin for decarbonizing industry, enabling clean transport, and supporting energy diversification.
