Impecunious, Prince Philip didn't start his life from a privileged position.
Prince Philip's parents were Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. His father was exiled from Greece and his uncle, King Constantine I, was forced to abdicate. George VI sent a navy warship to pick up their family, with Philip carried onboard as a baby in an orange box. They took with them no money and only the clothes they were wearing.
When Prince Philip was very young, his father ran away with a mistress. His mother was in a sanatorium for five years. He didn't see either of them for years. His sisters married men who were Nazi party members in Germany. With neither parent present for years, Philip was sent between boarding schools and numerous relatives. His eldest sister, Cecile, to whom he was closest, but who remained in Germany, died in a plane crash with her husband and children. During World War II Prince Philip was on active duty in the British Navy. He was in the thick of the action in the Mediterranean as an officer on board the HMS Valiant during the battle of Crete, and on the Indian Ocean.
Prince Philip was a war hero and a courageous, honourable man. His whole life was about unwavering service, to this country, to his children, and overwhelmingly to his wife, her HM the Queen.
