MMs playing games - isn't this a frequent debating point and the reality is more to do with the mid point - a quick internet search will explain it - I found this which offers an explanation:
You cannot identify buys or sells as that information is not logged. Some data sources infer if a trade is a buy or sell by comparing the price to the spread at the time. However, this is known to be inaccurate, especially for a volatile stock or tight spread. Equally, there are usually different market makers with different spreads and different spreads depending on the volume traded.
So we have an imperfect system which the MMs and traders may or may not play to their advantage - that I don't know but given the volumes and volatility I suspect the system is just trying to match up a best guess as to whether its a buy or sell.
I don't personally subscribe to the conspiracy theories but maybe I am being naive here.
