A really interesting and thought-provoking piece. I am in this for the long haul but I imagineif you were short term your nerves could get rather frayed!

No one has absolute faith in analysts but why do you think them all so upbeat? I could not agree more with your comment about prepping the market. This is what Next so well

Neil, that is just rudeness without reason. It reminds me of how we treated Fender when he made his very prescient and accurate forecast

I entirely take your point. In my case, and for personal reasons , I didn't want a hefty CGT bill. My plan is to hold until 500 (if we ever get there!) and then consider my options. Another point that distinguishes us is that you have a technical grip that allows you to trade with confidence: that is not something I have. I have every faith in Archie and Stuart but the market does feed on rumour and information so it does mean comms need to be carefully considered.

Neil, no FTSE 100 company keeps all IR and FMR in house. All would have an external consultancy able to provide informed advice from the mass of contact it has with every segment of the investment community. Why does Next rarely put a foot wrong? Because it's external adviser Alistair Mackinnon Musson is continually feeding back to Simon Wolfson what the City is saying/thinking. In that way, Next can hone it's message so that investors don't get the jitters. Many potential investors will be put off investing in MKS for the simple reason that it seems incapable of proper messaging. Bad IR leads to crazy price gyrations. Trust me. I used to advise Kingfisher when Archie basically ran it.

I am not sure that badnewinvestor wanted to be a trader. I suppose he bought at that level and was rather shocked that good results were presented in such a way as to cause a 20% drop in SP or whatever it is. I bought for the long term at 250 and I sit on something like 160k shares. I don't want to trade. I want an SP that is reflective of the intrinsic value of the company. I say it again as I have said before the wild gyrations show that communications are ot being properly managed

We may need more than a bit of luck. A great company but not handling investor relations with skill.

Neil, let me explain what I suspect is the issue. I give this opinion as an ex-financial pr adviser. My understanding is that MKS has taken financial and investor comms in house. This was really unwise. An external agency has a vast range of contacts among journalists and analysts in a way that an in-house team can never achieve. The external consultant can give candid advice on presentation of results and be invaluable as an intelligence resource. I could go on but had Finsbury still been advising it would have prevented this mess. You indicate that these SP swings are nothing to worry about. I totally disagree. It shows considerable mixed messaging. MKS needs to get a grown-up FPR back on board

No, Neil, I fear we must agree to disagree. Analysts must feel left with egg on their faces. What Next would have done is prepare the market a bit better. Stuart sounded far too downbeat as if the entire turnround was under threat. I reckon even with the Year end results he will be pessimistic. This SP will be stuck in the doldrums for a long time. 1ontheup is quite right. Unnecessary to keep going on about the turnaround.

I could not agree more. Good communication is vital and Stuart made it seem as if everything was still fragile when clearly that is not the case. Archie should have been given a greater role in getting the message across. He has been doing it for decades. I suspect even with good results in May there will be caution. They both need to get around and talk to the institutions who must be a bit surprised

So, analysts say Ocado results are on the back of its majority sales of M&S product range. Ocado's SP soars and M&S' s dips again. M&S needs to up its communications.
