Half the plot slopes down and there’s a spring feeding the original pond but I think the cover and leaf fall should sustain it and as we concur,Mother Nature will do the managing once I’ve given it over! I guess the wind and climate in general stops you having trees unless you build a solid walled enclosure but not sure that would work. Peaceful place to live I’d imagine.

Only 7 acres, tightly packed in places it has to be said but that was deliberate as I wanted cover quicker for escaping pheasants etc who look like they’re breeding now. Also there’s quite a chunk of the originals that didn’t take and lost a few in the drought last year.

Just doing my bit really mate,it’s a hobby I enjoy and quite rewarding at times as I’ve got no commercial interest aside collecting some of the wild food we grow and logs of course!! Most of the trees are natives so lots of hawthorn,blackthorn,wild cherry etc but have put fruit trees,hazelnuts and got our first crop of sweet chestnuts and mulberries last year. Feeding the wildlife feeds the soul imo!!

I’ll look at that mate. We’ve planted truckloads of stuff but the wildlife itself decides which work as they are pretty good at digging up and eating so much and protecting beyond rabbit guards kind of misses the point. Aside from the trees were also making hedgie boxes and semi submerged pipes and that kind of infrastructure which the small stuff soon get stuck into. As the woodland areas are now about six years in, its starting to almost create an environment of its own so just adding bits of structure here and there to help it along,big project. Do you have trees on Orkney?

6,000 was the initial load of bare root whips and hundreds of others since to infill. The best way of describing it is a managed wilderness.

Agreed on the importance of getting the wildlife,even if it’s just bird boxes and a few bee-friendly plants. I’m doing it on a slightly larger scale up there and have one pond which I’ve left wild but didn’t have much success digging some others(don’t hold water) so have switched to planting the holes to try and create boggy areas,mostly with comfrey which the bees love!!

No just a haircut lol. Don’t worry I’m only processing fallers and always planting more. I also seem to have a steady supply of plants people want to get rid of on some of my gardening jobs etc so filling up the land nicely,except the ones the rabbits dig up that is!
Let’s hope we both get some winners this year,had a few good ones but dwarfed by the bad ones currently!

Luckily I have friends with fallers they wanted clearing,goes like that sometimes as I never can say no! Do you find it best to season it outside on pallets so the elements get to it for a bit or dry and undercover straight away?

Glad to hear it mate. My strategy of buying if it looks cheap somewhat mixed but shares fluctuate don’t they?! On a more positive note the woodshed is full to the brim and half the garden currently housing rings from a copper beech and a poplar plus some oak I’m still waiting to split.

I think if I was serious about it I’d dig down the old air raid shelter and do it with blockwork etc as the access and everything just doesn’t work...more important things to do like planting more trees come first. Have a good week ahead all.

Biggest challenge is getting one of the big containers and cranes through the gate bud....digging the holes no issues lol!! Or I could just bury my head in the hole and imagine saga will go back to the ipo price,labour won’t nationalise everything if they get in and none of my surviving aims won’t dilute themselves to oblivion...carlsberg/if only...

Even more incentive for me to dig a bunker complex at the land!!!

Frightening prospect of wealth distruction if the Marxists got in,I’d like to think most of the electorate has moved on from the ‘70s but I keep forgetting most of them never experienced them and the only people who’d actually vote for them would be the have nots and not prepared to work for it chip on the shoulder types but if the tories(who are more centrist than ever...taxing divvies etc tsssk) carry on arguing amongst themselves.....gulp!
