OEMs and Miners1 Feb 2023 12:02
I make an assumption that we finally get the suitable MLs, however big that assumption might be.
There have been calls for offtake agreements to have been arranged for many years now, but none have there been. We had the lapsed Galp arrangement, albeit at a higher price than the current sp, which might have ended up being a cuckoo in the nest. Now we are the 100% owners of MdB, in a potentially excellent jurisdiction with a much wider list of potential suitors, many with access and ability to write much bigger cheques, because they have to, to secure their own futures. The options to tie in with an Un encumbered European near term raw material miner are limited, extremely limited.
LAC and GM confirms that tie ups between OEMs and Miners, as predicted, will happen. No doubt other OEMs such as Tesla would have been interested. With talk of an existential threat to parts of the European car industry, the absence of any existing agreements, opens any future arrangements to the widest possible market at a crucial time to secure long term supplies.
All that said, and however positive, we then need to factor in the initial assumption and bring us back to the current day reality.
