The Times newspaper published an article yesterday headlined ‘ Growing jihadist revolt closes schools in Mali ‘.
‘ It is 5 years since French troops turned back the march of the jihardists that captured Timbuktu and imposed Islamic law there before turning their sights south towards the capital, Bamako. Now Mali’s jihadists are back, threatening to carve out a terrorist sanctuary in the Sahel.’ ‘ Across central Mali government officials have fled assassinations and kidnappings, leaving the militants free to set up Islamic courts, gather their own taxes and win the support of local populations neglected by the state.’’ Combining the Islamist cause with that of 20 million marginalised Fulanis presents a new dimension of danger. Many Fulani already complain that they are viewed with suspicion because of their ethnicity, by the state and by other communities. ‘ ‘Intercommunal violence is now claiming more lives than the jihadist attacks, driving even more people into their arms ‘- there is a warning from Colonel Yahya deputy commander of G5 Sahel ‘ if they get the people on their side , they will win the war’
I know little about politics in Mali and I don’t know if the article is relevant to people on here DYOR.
