I agree with you on this. We tend to think of GGP as the prey rather than the predator; but Shaun Day's c.v. points in the opposite direction. His problem at the moment is that GGP doesn't have much money; but once the income from Havieron arrives, he won't be using it to pay dividends, he'll be using it to buy other companies. And rightly so.

Thanks for bringing the Lassonde curve to our attention again. I had wondered if we were in the orphan phase; but now think this can't be so, because we have a father in Newcrest, personified by Sandeep Biswas. The share price should be on the upswing before production begins: "financiers invest directly to develop the project into an operating mine."

The reasons for the decline must be found elsewhere; and one can take one's pick from the ample menu of options provided on this billboard. Shorting, falling gold price, a mysterious buyer forcing the price down, market makers trying to increase the volume, frightened investors selling in anticipation of a bear market, etc. Obviously for anyone who is already in, the best thing is to hold.

I don't fully understand all this. But I do remember that the interview with GH and SD filled me with foreboding. Probably Gervaise was only looking down to read his script from his laptop, or to look at the monitor; but if that was a happy man, I'm a Dutchman. Anyhow, I didn't act on my foreboding; and it seems silly to sell now, after almost a 50% drop.

One thing that's clear is, the lower the share price, the greater the probability of a takeover. If it goes to 10p or below (which is quite possible, in a bear market), obviously Newcrest will pounce, and offer us 15 pence, which many of us will be glad to accept (for we will then be in a state of fear, as we were in 2008).

The basket of currencies had crossed my mind, and is probably the best way forward. And certainly the Chinese government is not renowned for its openness and transparency.

There's also a non-financial problem. When a rising power begins to challenge a dominant one, the result is often war (the classic example here was identified by Thucydides; Athens versus Sparta). Let us hope that it doesn't happen in this particular case.

Here's a Kitco interview with Peter Schiff forecasting the collapse of the dollar, and a return to the gold standard.

In theory, the renminbi should become the global reserve currency, because China will soon overtake the US as the world's largest economy. But there are political factors, and the euro may be a competitor, because it represents not only a large economy, but also human rights and democracy. Whether either the renminbi or the euro will be backed by gold, as the $ and before that the £ once were, remains to be seen.

What is clear is that the first half of the 20th century saw a transfer of political, economic and military hegemony from Britain to the US, and that the 21st century will see a similar transfer from the US to China. Empires rise and fall. It was ever thus.
