Name one JV that has been successful? UKOG have a history of failing either before the race has started or before the first hurdle. The latest being PPP and HH. Before that it was BB. It won't be long before Aladdin's lamp gets rubbed up the wrong way.

UKOG's use of the term "cavern" should not be taken literally. It does not help when "Storengy - Storage in salt cavern" give a very simplistic view of what the cavern would look like. You only need to view https://postimg.cc/BL6MMJwV to see that the formation at Portland is numerous layers of salt interposed with other solid elements. Hardly the large "cavern" UKOG are portraying in their presentations.

Anyone worked out what the "BPA" in "BPA@ukogplc.com" stands for?

I'm pretty sure the fool would have come up with "British Pipeline Agency"

Dear Mr Sanderson,

Thank you for your letter of 16 October to the Department for Business & Trade, regarding UK

Energy Storage’s Hydrogen Storage Projects in Dorset and East Yorkshire. Your

correspondence has been passed to this Department and I am responding as this matter falls

under my Ministerial portfolio.

I was pleased to read your correspondence. As you know, hydrogen will be a key sector for

the UK and play a key role in the mission to make the UK a Clean Energy Superpower. The

Government has taken steps to support the hydrogen sector, which include the confirmation of

£2.3 billion in revenue funding for the eleven green hydrogen projects in the first hydrogen

allocation round. The Government has also announced the National Wealth Fund (NWF),

which builds on the success of the former UK Infrastructure Bank. It will have a broader

mandate, extending beyond infrastructure to support delivery of the wider industrial strategy in

areas where there is an undersupply in private finance. At least £5.8 billion of the NWF’s

capital will focus on the sectors announced in the manifesto: green hydrogen, carbon capture,

ports, gigafactories and green steel.

As you are also aware, storage developers face a number of market barriers. These include

high costs, long lead-times and uncertainty around when demand for storage will emerge. This

is why, by 2025, the Government is committed to the design of a new business model for

hydrogen storage infrastructure to enable private sector investment and remove market

barriers. The Energy Act 2023 provides the legislative framework that will underpin the delivery

of the hydrogen transport and storage business models. We are continuing to proceed at pace

to design the model and intend to resume collaboration with industry after publishing a market

engagement plan as it progresses towards the final business model design.

I am tabling this statement to inform Members of the publication of the hydrogen to power market intervention consultation response on 9 December 2024. This response commits to delivering a hydrogen to power business model to support the accelerated deployment of hydrogen to power as low-carbon long-duration flexible electricity generating capacity.

Making Britain a clean energy superpower by 2030 is one of the Prime Minister’s five missions. Unabated gas currently provides the majority of flexibility in Great Britain and so the deployment of hydrogen to power—the conversion of low-carbon hydrogen to produce low-carbon electricity—will play an important part in displacing unabated gas generation from the power system, to support the clean power mission, and the Government’s legally binding target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

Low-carbon hydrogen can make our energy system more flexible, resilient, and independent. When connected with large-scale storage, hydrogen to power can provide electricity to cover longer periods of lower renewable output, while also creating a decarbonisation pathway for unabated gas power plants. The hydrogen to power business model will de-risk investment in hydrogen to power by mitigating the deployment barriers we identified, through a dispatchable power agreement-style business model, helping to support the unlocking of investment in hydrogen to power and improving the pipeline of projects.

The response document commits to:

Delivering a Hydrogen to Power Business Model based on a Dispatchable Power Agreement-style mechanism to support the deployment of hydrogen to power.

Publishing a Hydrogen to Power Business Model market engagement document in 2025 outlining further detail on the proposed design of the Hydrogen to Power Business Model and plans for launching the first allocation round.

Establishing a hydrogen to power industry expert working group. This will provide a key forum for Hydrogen to Power Business Model design and strategic policy considerations.

Enabling hydrogen to power to participate in the Capacity Market as soon as practical.

This publication is an important step towards supporting the deployment of hydrogen to power, a key low-carbon flexible technology, and therefore facilitating a clean power system. It will build on the positive stakeholder feedback received through the consultation and provide industry with clarity on Government’s position on the technology and the next steps for implementing the market intervention.

The 2nd site in Dorset and Yorkshire have not been named (probably for obvious reasons). I bet when they do we shall see the sites are not viable.
