Research led by Dr Ruth Godfrey at Swansea University has demonstrated the feasibility of integrating portable liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS) with innovative low-waste extraction materials, enabling the creation of a compact ‘Lab in a Van’ system. This field-deployable platform enables rapid and accurate detection of PFAS in water, soil, effluent, and biological samples on-site, significantly reducing analysis turnaround time and environmental impact compared to traditional laboratory methods. PFAS levels of health concern are so low (parts per trillion) that testing conventional grab samples is a suboptimal method because collection, transportation to, and delays at the laboratory can easily result in corrupted samples with inaccurate results.

Metir supported the programme through a three-and-a-half-year PhD sponsorship that confirmed its proprietary mass spectrometry platform can identify a broader range of PFAS compounds. Successful field trials on a Welsh river in April 2025 validated the technology’s real-world capability. Metir continues to collaborate with its large US-based distribution and instrumentation partner to optimise and scale the detector for potential commercial deployment, particularly in the US market. A recent visit to the partner’s facilities in the US confirms the progress being made.

Excited for the next two years. I think we are going to see more news in Metir development around PFAS in 2026, possibly more installation in new areas. 2027, I think things will take off more as regulatory requirements bed in.

The potential in this area is huge.

The EU is going to see significant expansion linked to regulatory mandate, drinking water PFAS monitoring thresholds will be in effect from January 2026 under EU drinking water rules, requiring expanded testing and reporting. The US is also likley to see major increase with aligned EPA reporting and standards. (Caveat, Trump). The UK is going to see a shift toward broader monitoring and now have a PFAS strategy.

The drivers for this are clear: New legal requirements and compliance deadlines; Public pressure & health risk awareness, market expansion of PFAS detection technologies, and analytical capabilities.

Further down the line, the Metir’s competitive edge is in portable, on-site PFAS detection, offering faster preliminary results compared with traditional lab methods. Most competitors fall into lab instrument providers or accredited testing services, not directly competing with mobile, rapid field systems — though some mobile labs (e.g., ClarosLabs) are closer to that space. So, if successful and I am glad they got some more money in to aid their expansion, it is easy to see a future takeover. Much further down the line.

Yes, it certainly has that posibility and if it all goes will will be ripe for being bought out. That is a long, way off, but nonethless, a very good product that differs from what is out there.

Same, a little top up. Am confident in progress. Won't reach the new highs for a bit, but the company is clearly making good and efficient progess, and as I remind myself, it remains a start up.

Good to see the new CFO and key hires to grow its business development function. Entering into a growth phase, which if executed, will see the SP climb into much better territory than what it is now.

The product has some enticing features if you are an author. As a failed one like me, that is, someone who has written a couple of short stories, and has two full-size fictions incomplete because I have the attention span of a knat, it looks good. The support functions for structure from the beginning will have some pulling power as that can be a real block, and providing voice character support is intriguing. Many an author struggles to define character voices, even well known authors. The presentation to agent will also entice. I think there is enough there to attract budding authors, and if it works also for established authors on scale, then we should be getting lots of sign ups, and this potential to film. I am sure there will be bumps along the way, and improvements that need to be made, but to my mind, this is a product that will attract both budding and experinced authors.
