The algorithm works off the mid-price at the time.
So, for instance, if they were showing on level 2 as 27 bid to 28 offered - 27-28 the mid would be 27.5 right?
Realistically the MM's will be competing for your business electronically so the spread in the real world may be 27.1 - 27.9.
If a MM got hit at 27.1 and say for instance he bought a lump in a market like today that's a bit soft, he may be aggressively offered just to take a quick turn at say 27.4 or cheaper.
If the Algo on LSE sees that print, it presumes that it's marked at the bid side of the price, so it must be a sell.
Always worth looking at the prints on the day around the time of the trade. Is there a big print at the bid? Is there a big print outside the offer? You have to use a bit of detective work to see the price action.
Remember, the MM's are always looking for flow, so will adjust the prices until they find buyers and sellers - that's where they make their money.
It's the Market Makers who have no stock rather than Jarvis.
Jarvis is the Broker, who electronically directs your order to the most competitive price in the market.
If the order was substantial in size, then they would call the MM to either make him a price to start the Business, or make to make an outright price to deal there and then. That's why you sometimes see larger chunks printing outside the current share price at a premium (or discount if you're a seller) in high-volume trading situations.
You're welcome
RDC are getting ready for our new financial year (June) we close out this year quite nicely but my 4 months here have been all about prep for the new exciting challenge, shaping the team, bringing about change in all we do with customer service and everything commercial leading the way, the next few weeks see us re-vamp the offices to reflect who we are and highlight the brand, our customers and supply partners must enjoy the experience of a site visit at RDC.
We are investing in the tech department where we are so strong on the knowledge and experience front, I have bought new challenges to them and they are more than coping.
We venture into compacted graphite iron very soon so if this is your area then talk to us, we are partnering with Sintercast to ensure we are top of the game and our customers appreciate the work taken on.

I think it's become a vehicle for IHT to be honest.
Alliance Senior isn't getting any younger bless him.
There's clearly a relatively decent Business in there somewhere, albeit suffering the same pressures as many online retailers. I suppose that's why Mashley has taken a stake.
But, agreed this has been moribund for weeks.
Figures are due shortly, so close period would obviously affect any transactions up to release.
I think Terry makes an interesting point.
However, I suspect with many of these complex corporate moves there may be more action to come.
It's certainly been on the Radar for some time. If AOP thinks it's a steal, are there other industry players thinking the same thing?
I certainly don't know, just throwing it out there for debate - just my train of thought.
