ExE have proven our L Series, they have all the data and are no doubt very happy with it and with AFC's support, but they want to get rid of Diesel Gensets and need much more power than the L Series can provide, and they want it for season 3. It is what it is.

I don't see the S Series with integrated Methanol Reformer being ready for season 3, as AFC are concentrating on the H2 and integrated Ammonia versions first, for ABB (and no doubt others like Vard too).

As for the St Helena, ExE will know about the S Series for maritime application, and the Vard project, so we are not out of the picture just because ExE want to try something different at events. They try different things all the time, that is just the nature of a new racing series.

Interesting the way they phrase it. I'd say the jury is still out as to who's FC's it will be going forward.

I see that Kaizen were still developing their integrated system in May this year. It uses "fuel cells from PowerCell", which anyone that's done their research would know are PEM.

"KCE has started accepting pre-orders and plans to deploy a 20-foot, 150 kW solution with pilot customers in Q4 of 2022."

So ExE is a pilot customer.

Requires 99.999% purity 'scientific grade' Hydrogen, the expensive stuff
Use PGM's so costly CAPEX
Not modular, if your Membrane gets an issue then you need to replace the whole FC stack

AFC from AFC Energy:
Can use Hydrogen as low as 75% purity, the dirt cheap stuff
Do not use PGM's but can use a tiny amount if preferred, so way cheaper CAPEX than PEM
Modular. AFC can replace a cartridge if there's an issue

ExE is not the be all and end all of AFC, these are way bigger fish that we are frying:

That's precisely why I emailed ExE to ask them if the AFC FC was being kept. In theory (only), if Kaizen supply a container with FC included, there's a good chance that they wouldn't need the AFC FC as well. Dropping the AFC FC, MSC Battery pack, Solar Panels, Water storage, etc, would also claw back space on the St Helena.

As I say, I doubt anyone at AFC will lose sleep on not getting a 3rd season after all that has been achieved in 2 seasons of Exe, and neither will I.

I see Utah as very important, because if it proves what the project owners believe it will, then it could grow very quickly into a huge oil supply anywhere that oil sands exist. Talking this potential down before it has been proven or disproven is a very glass completely empty view. Considering that someone is willing to buy a big chunk of the project and throw big money at it, indicates that the glass is more than half full.

Interesting point. I've not had a good look to see if they have any other deployments, but maybe they are at an early stage like AFC was when it signed up with ExE and so offering a loss-leader cheap deal to ExE?

AFC have done really well with ExE. Not getting a third season using our old technology Fuel Cell at ExE, I doubt anyone at AFC will be losing any sleep over it.

Thanks for posting this! Some much-needed clarification.

So, Extreme E were looking for a solution to power the whole site, but solar + electrolysis + battery + fuel cell to generate 18-22MWh of electricity across the course of a week, would have been massive.

Methanol taken on the St Helena was their solution to this issue.

AFC are only at the stage of Methanol Power Towers, so likely not in a position to offer a Methanol based system that big, yet.

Could ExE have waited for AFC to develop a Methanol based system like the Kaizen one? Possibly, but they are a (literally!) fast moving event, wanting to keep at the forefront of sustainable technology, which Methanol power is, and they wanted to get rid of diesel gensets from across the event ASAP.

I suspect the usual suspects that claimed ExE was a total waste of time, will now claim it's a disaster that AFC have lost out to another company/technology. I don't see it that way.

What I see is ExE have been fantastic for AFC, as lots of politicians, dignitaries, clients, business owners, etc, have got to see the AFC system operating at ExE in often extreme conditions (hot, cold, dust, humidity, etc), so has been great PR. It has also cost AFC in directors and staff time and money to cover the events for PR and system support.

ExE has proven the AFC system in real world use, in harsh conditions, at an event where it is a critical part of their infrastructure.

After 2 seasons of ExE, I am not concerned if the AFC system will not be used in season 3. We have achieved a lot and likely added a load of clients to our list. Season 3 might have added some more clients, but AFC will have the 100kW S Series out in the very near future and that will certainly bring in a lot of new clients, plus allow AFC to sell it to clients that have been waiting in line for it to appear. And we have the Power Tower where the trials that are running should lead to sales of those.

I did send an email yesterday to ExE asking if the Kaizen system would replace or compliment the Enowa/AFC Fuel Cell, I've not had a reply yet, but if it's anything different to the above I'll let you know.

The European Parliament, Commission and Member States yesterday achieved consensus on including shipping in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), with the provisional agreement including a landmark decision to ringfence ETS revenues for maritime projects under an Innovation Fund.

The ETS will be phased in over a three-year period, with operators surrendering 40% of verified emissions in 2024, 70% in 2025 and 100% in 2026. This is a faster implementation period than earlier iterations of the proposals had suggested.

The ETS will include vessels of 5,000 GT and above and will apply to 100% of intra-EU voyages, and 50% of voyages between the EU and the rest of the world. Monitoring of some vessels under the 5,000 GT threshold will take place and their potential inclusion in the ETS will be considered by 2026.

Another notable element of the agreement is that methane and nitrous oxide emissions are also on the slate for inclusion in the scheme, after CO2 emissions.

Look at the current Bunker Fuel prices and you'll see that the increase is significant, certainly enough to get shipping companies looking closely at getting our Fuel Cells on board.

The "Agreed marketing rights with Extreme E" I took as Extreme E use the AFC FC to promote their green credentials, and in return AFC got it's branding seen in the videos and could invite its clients to the races to show them the AFC FC working in harsh environments.

ENOWA covered the AFC FC with their branding when they became the ExE Hydrogen Partner, so that indicates to me that ENOWA inherited the AFC+ExE agreements and are now the one's renting the AFC FC.
