No doubt you've already worked-out the answer to your above question - but the display of naivety and self-interest speaks volumes. I too would much prefer to stay with a narrative which directly involves Rolls-Royce. The noise on this forum is atrocious and distracting.

Agree, the prospects for an increased dividend, robust demand for products, Shell's reputation for having a successful trading division and their investments for future greener energy are the reasons that I'm relaxed about adding to my position circa £20. I have a similar attitude toward BP and am a long-term holder of both. I was coin-tossing yesterday as to which to top-up, but in the end, my purchase of Shell just makes my stakes in both companies more balanced.

An old and very seasoned cocoa trader at the firm I first worked with in the City was known for his pithy pearls of wisdom. He came into my department one day and asked me why I was, ahem, 'ranting and raving'. I said I was miffed because I'd missed the bottom of the market by quite some margin. He counseled - 'Son, if you're constantly trying to pick bottoms, all you'll finish up with is **** under your fingernails. It's mainly about averages'. Of course, equities work differently to soft commodities, but there are some universal metrics worth keeping in mind, most of the time.

It's not unusual to keep the books closed if the bid proposal is way below what the board would consider. Senior board members just consider unrealistic bids as an opportunistic excuse to snoop - despite the requirement of non-disclosure clauses. There's an argument to say that today's events are an indication of the board's confidence, despite the effect on the share price. It's an intriguing play for all participants - albeit painful and costly - so far...

When I bought last Friday I was considering the points that Pompal has raised and in addition the refurbishment work which accompanies the active housing market and the prospect of huge electricity bills as we approach the darker, colder months. My average is down, but obviously I wish I'd waited...

I'm in a similar position, albeit a slightly smaller holding at a slightly lower price, and I've had them many years and lost track of the prospects for the company. I'm tempted to top-up and average down further, but I really haven't done any research :(

I think the developments of the last 24hrs can make a justifiable argument for top-slicing or topping-up - depending on personal circumstances, but selling out completely at this point seems like an act of..., let's be kind,...desperation, rather than a sound commercial decision. But anyway, it's a free choice.

Anyone tempted to top-up after the bell?
