Energy Adviser cites declining production and high import costs as government shifts households to cylinder use.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan said on Wednesday (October 8) that Bangladesh will no longer provide new gas connections to residential areas through pipelines, citing dwindling domestic supply and soaring import costs.
“There will be no more pipeline gas connections to residential areas. People must accustom themselves to using gas cylinders,” Fouzul Kabir Khan told reporters after inspecting part of the Dhaka–Sylhet highway at the Sarail–Bishwa Road intersection in Brahmanbaria district.
He said the country’s gas production had “significantly declined,” forcing it to import gas at a cost of BDT 60–65 per liter. “Under such circumstances, it is no longer possible to supply gas to homes through pipelines,” he added.
The adviser emphasized that future pipeline connections would be restricted to industrial use only.
He was accompanied by Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Didarul Alam, Superintendent of Police Ehteshamul Haque, and other senior officials during the inspection.
