RE: Pandemic23 Dec 2021 08:42
Tests will be needed for another 2-3 years, maybe 5 years
I love that this is milder, I've seen the reports, but please put it into the right context
This is appearing to be milder, and may yet be milder, than the previous Delta strain - however, it is much more transmissible and it is potentially still more severe than the original Wuhan strain, hence why a lot of unvaccinated people are filling up hospitals
If you have a virus that is 50% less lethal, but infects 2x more people - what happens? You get the same result
Now it may be, due to vaccines, mutations and previous infection (not just Ab but T and B Cells) it appears much less severe in terms of admissions and severity of those admissions, leading to less fatalities which is superb, or it may also be less severe so a combination of both - great!
However, in terms of vaccinating the world, well people are now talking about a fourth dose - do we not realise that until the world is vaccinated, this is not going to end
The UK is not the ROW, look at the restrictions in europe and the far east, even parts of america are shutting down (chicago voluntarily has closed bars and music theatres)
Plus you then have the issue of Long covid and side affects, what if you have long covid but never took a test / positive result? Will you still get support?
For anyone saying this is a mild cold, I dont think I have ever gotten on a plane where someone had a cold and all 150 passengers walked off the plane with it - this is disruptive, VERY disruptive and it is much more severe to the entire population than a mild cold
So, will there be more mutations, who knows, but in terms of testing it isn't going anywhere at least for a couple of years IMHO - in terms of restrictions and impact on the economy, I dont see any scenario where it does have a huge impact next month, even if it is a 'mild cold' it will still cause lockdowns and isolations, so the economy will be massively impacted - testing helps move the economy
