Crazyfund. You are wrong, you do not need to test with covid-19 to be certain of destroying it. In extremis you might consider saponification or incineration as proven of destroying all organic material and hence certain to destroy covid-19. In several covid-19 inactivation studies surrogates such as influenza A virus and RSV have been used. They are perfectly acceptable as they are more robust than SARS-CoV-2 to the particular method used and hence if there is destruction you are guaranteed to destroy covid-19. Staphyloccus aureus has even been used in an autoclaving test of PPE as it has greater thermal resistance than SARS-CoV-2.Inactivation studies are not the same as developing a vaccine or a therapeutic and surrogates are perfectly acceptable reporters. The bovine coronavirus and SARS-COV2 are the same class of virus with the same susceptibilities and resistances to destruction which relate to their capsid structure and composition. If a surface catalytic decomposition works with the bovine coronavirus it will work with SARS-CoV-2. You and your brother are from the same family but not the same. However, you are both equally susceptible to heat, radiation, oxidation etc.

Mancs99. Yes, the results from this type of study would be the same. I’m not sure what regulation is already in place for this. The EU would normally describe a common technical specification under Annex 2a of Medical Devices. This would specify what experiments, what targets and what minimum efficacy to be achieved before allowing CE marking. In such a CTS it would be very unlikely COVID-19 would need to be used as the target for surface decontamination but rather a related, safer target. However, I don’t think any such CTS has been listed yet. Importantly, if it were and if it did require demonstration against COVID-19 itself then the results would be the same as for the bovine coronavirus tested.
It is likely all this will be dealt with in the final study report.

Mancs99. There is no significant difference between bovine and human corona viruses with respect to their stabilities and using surrogates in this type of study is industry norm.

Malachi. No the virus persists on plastics for 72 hours plus. I'm sure when the full study is published they will have the comparative data you refer to. The destruction curve will follow an exponential decay and there will be very significant destruction at 4 hours in order to reach 99% at 24 hours.

Weathergeek. The test data quoted was a % destruction at time point 24 hours. The full data will show an exponential decay with very significant reductions at earlier time points. Trust me, this is a good result.

Temple of Doom. Survival time on metal surfaces is a few hours and 24 hours on cardboard but plastics is over 72 hours. Given the ubiquitous use of plastics d2p activity is a huge advance that, if used, will have an enormous impact. Not just now but for many years ahead as Covid and other viruses threaten to become endemic.

There are very good reasons why plastic is a beneficial product, not least the significantly reduced energy costs of transporting liquids. Using glass bottles increases the weight massively.

If we have plastic (which we always will) then it should be made biogradable for when some inevitably escapes into the environment.

The addition of d2w means it degrades to CO2 and water; not ‘slime’ or ‘chemicals.
