Typically, emperical would mean based on non-statistical observations. For robust science and analysis, you need the statistical data to confirm if your 'emperical' observations are correct.
If, on the basis of statistical data, the nature of observation is accurate, then it carries more validity in scientific research. My guess is that considering 'labskin' is something which is 'artificial' anyway - the researchers can make changes to the 'nature' of the skin to try and resemble it closest to the type of human skin it would have an impact on too. For example, is the Black skin any more/less responsive to a White skin and so forth.
That's my impression tho. Could be wrong.
