Many people I expect. BAE has served me well, but I sold out near the end of last month to pile into mining.

Of course dividends, and their return expressed as a percentage, depend upon when you buy and sell. But the crucial thing is your overall return. Simply record your investment pot value "A" (current shares value plus any dividend or other cash retained in the account) at the start of the month, and at the start of the next month record it again "B", work out the net value "C" you have added into the pot during the month (may be negative), and your return for the month is (B-C)/A. Keep a record of the individual month's percentage return, then multiply them together over any period for your total return. That is what counts.

Crossley, yes yours is currently 12.7 if that is the only share you own, but what goes up comes down!
Eccles, but that method of calculation does not have much meaning in terms of impact on your finances as it ignores the number of shares you have, nor the share price change, and they are not additive across different shares.

@gwm : I was not talking about dividend but capital growth. Some people seem to think dividend return is everything, but your return is the dividend % you actually receive for the shares you own and the period you have owned them for, plus the percentage gain in the share price. If you bought RIO late yesterday and sold right now you have a capital gain of 6% and no dividend. You have therefore gained in a day what a savings account will give you in a year. 6% and your money back.

Of course timing is the key for that extreme case, but I am a long term holder in most cases, years or months. Over the last 5 years (up the end of Sep as I do not keep monthly records for more than a year, just retaining the quarter figures), RPI over 5 years has been 26% and my share return has been 45%. This is calculated month by month, monthly return based on asset value gain + money out(eg pension withdrawal) - money in.)

Actual share names have been varied, starting with a portfolio of classic dividend payers and moving to now 80% of portfolio being mining. Always had RIO, always will, quantities varying as you decide to move money around. TGA and GLEN have done well after I decided to move heavily into coal at the right time (thanks to Greta), but I have taken a big hit on Gazprom and Norilsk nickel with the reaction to the Ukraine war.

5%pa is losing 7% per year when RPI is 12% as it is now (but of course RPI hopelessly under-indicates inflation as it effects me, spending relatively heavily on food and energy. They should publish a "pensionerPI" figure.)

You need to put money into something that will return more than RPI, not less. That should be your target, and is more than achievable.

There seem to be a huge number of transactions for 10,000 shares, or 100,000 shares, as well as non-powers but multiples like 25,000 500,000 and 75,000. As these normal buys? Whenever I buy shares I have some money to allocate and always buy what I can for that money. The resulting quantities are "random" numbers. What about the readers of this board?

This is another factor that makes me think "high volume offloading". (You cannot trust the buy or sell flag, as has many times been demonstrated.) If this is the case, this is NOT "in an orderly manner as to not upset the market", as it is driving the shares continually downward. I am the market, and I am upset.

vick : AJBell also paid the dividend in Sterling at a rate of 3.000183 per share, and when it is a different currency they quote the currency and conversion rate they apply. So LSE shares are definitely sterling.

It seems to me your broker bought them on the South Africa exchange, and they would be paid in Zar. What was the effective sterling value you received per share? (Presuming they didn't actually give you Zar notes, but credited your account in sterling.)

Yes, they worry me a bit. I can only assume these are the big holders releasing their holdings after the first year in an orderly manner so as to not upset the market. If that is the case then it could be a L O N G while until we see an increase in SP.

beardozer, if I were you I'd keep quite about your putting more money into ORR. Investors here will be doubting your sanity !

beardozer, to be honest I can see why LTHs would top up, believing in the future. This is a very good price if you hold that view. I do, but I have not been topping up because I have no cash and I have a huge stake in the company already by my standards. Haven't sold any. I seem to be one of those sorry people whose shares fall relentlessly but hang on to them because they "know" they will come good.

So their sole existing highwall miner has been moved to new territory. Does that mean the former area has been worked out and now useless? This is not what I expected.

Makes me a bit suspicious. Quick investigation reveals no particular expertise in Worley that AAL don't have in spades. Is this a prelude to selling off Woodsmith at a huge profit, having stolen ("legally") the company from the previous shareholders?

diamond man, I cannot see dividends not continuing, nor can I see the share falling soon. It depends on your definition of "very short term". Earlier today you reckoned "I'll take 6 months to a year view", but that is not most people's definition of "very short term". Come back and review in a year, sure. Until then it will remain my largest holding. (I am fresh out of "ciggies or insurers", Krusty.)

Inefficient, but maybe not for reason of high manpower. What other railway line needs armed guards patrolling every yard of line to stop the track being cut and stolen for scrap, or to provide escorts for the pigeons they use for signalling because all the copper wires have been stolen?

There have been many posts on the topic. Suggest you start with "Withholding dividend tax 20% to 10%" from March, and any other "withholding tax" topic since then.

It does not seem to me to work at 20/80 if you intend any purchases except in a blue moon, maybe even a violet moon. If you were going by 30/70, in the last 6 months you would have sold at 380 (assuming you had some), and not bought any, and you would have missed out on the 30% rise since then. I prefer the gut feel method.

6 months ago I invested some new money on 3 companies, having considered 8. One of the 3 went down 10%, 1 static, the other up 30%. The discarded 5 mainly went up between 25 and 40%, so my guts are no better than RSI :)

As I read it, RSI has not hit 20 or 80 for at least a year, whereas SP has risen a lot.

Today is UK dividend reinvestment day, but so far it seems to have dropped the price 3.5% and still falling. People waiting for the bottom.
