Interesting question. I expect with its Dutch roots it should be pronounced as you say, but with the "oo" as in "book" rather than "root", a hard "g" as in "goat" rather than a "dj" as in "jelly", and "e" as in beck rather than as in "mete", and finally the accent on the first syllable. Nevertheless I go full English and call it "thun" as in thunder, still with a hard g, "ela" as in potato peeler, and the accent on the second syllable.
