They are planning a €20m investment in new technology which will allow them to go deeper in search of more natural gas. Current expectations are that the field will be of limited use by 2026 or 2027, leaving Irish households and businesses almost fully reliant on the UK for gas supplies.

Officials from the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications were made aware of the proposals earlier this year.

The Corrib gas field is currently the only domestic source of natural gas.

The gas is produced through a subsea facility off the Mayo coast and brought ashore through an 83km pipeline to Bellanaboy Bridge gas plant.

It is understood Vermilion has already supplied a ‘Design Notification’ to the Commission for Regulation of Utilities to kickstart the process of building a new cooling system at the existing plant site.

They hope to submit a request for planning permission to Mayo County Council late this year. A source familiar with the plans told the independent.ie a new cooling system would allow them extract gas at depths that are currently beyond reach.

The executives also put forward a case that further exploration in the Corrib region using two existing licences could extend the field for another 20 or even 30 years

While the plans to extend the longevity of the Corrib field won’t help alleviate concerns about blackouts this winter, it may reduce the dependence on imported gas in the future.

In a statement the company confirmed: “On July 26 An Taoiseach met with a delegation from Vermilion Energy to discuss the current gas supply to Ireland and the importance of the Corrib gas infrastructure to Ireland’s security of supply.”

The meeting was attended by the company’s president, Dr Dion Hatcher, Vice President Darcy Kerwin and Managing Director in Ireland Ryan Carthy. Mr Martin was accompanied by two officials.

It is understood the executives also put forward a case that further exploration in the Corrib region using two existing licences could extend the field for another 20 or even 30 years. The Government has banned licences for new gas exploration, but existing ones can still be activated.

Now Is this part of intelligent strategy to persuade incoming government - let’s get the most out of Corrib, inishkea etc and then it can be repurposed as a massive renewable winds etc centre .
