Just to break up the squabbling for a sec …I got to thinking today how much revenue the gov steal from us for doing SFA on share trading every day AND they take it off turnover not ! profit as you know ,well here is the answer 😏
Stamp duty on shares?
Revenue from stamp duty on shares peaked in 2000 at £4.7bn. After a depressed period, there was a brief recovery with elevated trading levels during Covid. However, there was a marked reduction in 2023 as shown below. The £3.3bn of tax revenue from stamp duty generated in 2023 equated to 0.3% of total UK tax revenue.
