Biosensors May Hold the Key to Mass Coronavirus Testing

Biosensors do not require that any material be multiplied to generate a signal, or that the biological sample go through multiple lab processing steps. This means tests can be extremely fast, running in under 60 seconds. And because a chip can contain multiple circuits, multiple tests of different kinds (viral RNA, antibody, and antigen) can run simultaneously on the same chip—the only requirement is that different biological substances act as detectors for different circuits.

This could allow the system to hunt for a wide variety of RNA fragments, antibodies, and antigens—not just the most likely one. Such an approach could reduce false results and provide additional information about a patient’s health, perhaps by testing for the flu and the new coronavirus at the same time.

Hence as new viral threats emerge, aptamer research and development seem likely to parallel viral emergence, because in the absence of effective vaccines or antisera, aptamers may provide a last line of defense.

That's a bad email you sent - this does more damage to the company - they atleast rns the media speculation news - other co's may not of done that - you are guessing they did this to help a seller - that's false and can plave you in a liable position, as you are insinuating the co did that purposely - you are expecting everything to get signed up over night.

Torre, Avct are well advanced in this compared to us - but agree our cap is tiny - has potential - but there is a time line we will follow - waiting on partners to scale up the PoC test first - so we have a few months before we even get to Avct's stage - that's one of the main differences

York based biotech; Aptamer Group have started a project to develop a synthetic antibody (aptamer) binder selective for the spike protein in SARS Cov-2. The company has developed a proof-of-concept device ready to scale up in 6-8 weeks and are looking for partners to work with on this.

The innovative test aims to work the SARS Cov2 spike protein aptamer into a lateral flow point-of-care test virus antigen detection in saliva samples in 10 minutes. This test would omit the need for lab-based PCR testing for the virus antigen, massively scaling up the number of SARS Cov-2 virus tests that can be conducted in a community setting.

Aptamer-based assay for virus detection have shown to improve these drawbacks and have proven to be of great potential as a feasible tool in virus detection and therapeutics due to their properties such as:

• Easy to synthesize and easy to screen
• Stable in different environmental conditions
• Selected aptamers are capable of adapting unique tertiary structures
• Recognize target molecules with high affinity and specificity
• Can be modified chemically at defined positions and linked stably to solid surfaces
• Can be reproducibly obtained in large quantities and at a low cost

Thus, aptamers have been considered as potentially useful diagnostic agents and are promising for two detecting viruses and treating viral infections. Taking advantage of the highly specific aptamers, independent research groups have demonstrated the application of aptamers in detection and therapeutics of SARS CoV.
