If you sell a share at 1p (the bid price from the mm would be 1p), at that point the ask price would be about 1.1p, so if someone buys that share the mm makes 0.1p (the difference between the bid and ask price. Most of the time the mm's only make whatever the spread is. So if you bought a share priced at £100 each (bid price £100), the ask price would be say £101 ish so the mm makes £1 if one share, £1000 if 1000 shares. However they are in competition with the other mm's so if the bid is £100 they can't just say the ask is £150. They compete for the business with the other mm's.
That is my understanding. The like large volume as that makes them more money (the spread). Tiny volume they make hardly a thing.
