Why would you want the war to continue?

Obviously shareholders want it ended, but surely non shareholders would want the war ended.

This narrative that Ukraine needs to get in a strong position before negotiations, but is it realistic to think a stronger position is likely? It certainly won’t be possible if US withdraw support.

It’s more likely the longer this continues the Ukrainian position will weaken.

Personally I think Z needs to be very careful with his demands and he at times comes across.

The whole meeting was around 40 minutes long and the focus is on the last 10 minutes, which I understand.

It went downhill when Vance was saying the dialogue was now needed to resolve the conflict. Z interrupted Vance basically saying you can’t trust Putin. It then descended into a bit of chaos.

Z again going down the road of telling a country what they should be doing.

US has done enough, now they focus on peace and resolution. If Z isn’t onboard with a peace with compromise then as Trump said, they walk away.

Trump said yesterday they are trying to broker a deal, this means that they are trying to be the middle man.

A few observations:

This is not the first time that Z has been accused of not being particularly grateful, Ben Wallace UK defence secretary made a similar comment around two years ago

The US wants to distance themselves from the war, I don’t blame them, it’s taking place in Europe and Europe should take the lead role.

Z mentioned again NATO membership, but this appears to be totally unachievable, so alternative solution has to be acceptable.

I thought Z came across extremely demanding with his security guarantees comments, see FOX news. Sure he can have a best case scenario, but ultimately he will have to take what is available and will need to work with it. He is not in a position to demand from countries the nature and level of guarantees.

Providing Ukraine with more weapons and financial support in my opinion will ultimately be a waste. Russia is not going to be removed from the territories it occupies, that is the reality of the situation. So unless Europe puts troops on the ground and WW3 starts the focus has to be on peace and how best to achieve that.

The people that wish to live in Russian occupied territories can live there/move there and those that don’t be allowed to move into non occupied areas. Hardly idea, but the situation needs to be resolved and no resolution will be idea for all concerned.

Europe will need to focus on guarantees as US is now taking a step back and Z has to accept that and he needs to temper his requirements and ambitions. Z can’t force nations to provide a level of guarantees he wants, the reality is he will have to accept what is given. His alternative is to fight on and that I believe to an extremely bad option.

We are now getting first reaction to yesterday’s US-Russia talks from Russian president Vladimir Putin.

He is quoted by Interfax and Tass agencies as saying that he is ready to get back to negotiations on Ukraine, which is a priority for Russia.

He also praised the US-Russia talks, saying their purpose was to increase trust between the two countries, and that the two sides acted without ‘bias or judgment’.

More now from Vladimir Putin, who has said that Ukraine would not be excluded from negotiations to end the war, according to Reuters.

“Without increasing the level of trust between Russia and the United States, it is impossible to resolve many issues, including the Ukrainian crisis,” Putin said, referring to Tuesday’s meeting in Riyadh.

“The goal of this meeting was precisely to increase trust between Russia and the United States.”

Ukraine and European governments were not invited to the talks in the Saudi capital, heightening their concern that Russia and the United States might cut a deal that ignores their vital interests.

But Putin claimed Russia had not rejected talks with the Europeans or with Kyiv, and it was they who had refused to talk to Moscow.

“We are not imposing anything on anyone. We are ready, I have already said this a hundred times - if they want, please, let these negotiations take place. And we will be ready to return to the table for negotiations,” he said. “No one is excluding Ukraine.”

To me US are obviously having significant input to potential peace agreement, but they are acting as a mediator between both parties.

In regards EU stating why aren’t they involved (yet) I don’t recall EU being involved in previous talks held in Turkey.

How could EU keep sanctions in place if both Ukraine and Russia reach a peace agreement, that would make zero sense.

My interpretation of the US/Russian talks are a precursor to actual peace talks, it’s laying the groundwork.

US have had dialogue with Ukraine so I believe currently US are sounding out both parties to see if there is middle ground and both can then iron out an agreement.

Currently there is no requirement for UK/EUA to be involved.

Could potentially be a positive week for EUA share price.

Yes because Russian press have a reputation for only telling the truth.

So many posters think everything is black and white.

Of course western press can be misleading as can Russian press.

I agree with you that I believe Zelensky will leave Ukraine once this is resolved and if I were a betting man I’d say he will settle in London.

I’m sure that is a comfort to those that do have debt.

For any business that potentially requires debt I’m sure 21% is a concern.
