China was pretty much a rice based economy.. Nixon went there in the 70's Heath also went there in the 70's..ever since then Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush GH, Clinton, Bush GW and Obama have all presided over US manufacturing disappearing to their west!.. ands its the same here in the UK... since Heath our governments, led by Wilson , Callaghan, Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown, cameron May and now Johnson have all exported our industry eastwards.
All the Chinese have done is taken advantage of the benefits USA UK & eu have given them... and who would not do the same. Trump is the only one who has pointed the finger at previous US regimes!
The question is Why have our governments built China up from a rice based economy to being the 2nd largest economy on the planet?
For 1) the continuing decline in real wages have made it necessary for the voters to be supplied with cheap goods because our governments have not produced the post war wealth they had promised us.
But I am sure there are other reasons!

Yes they do have an ongoing friendship but as your link shows neither will be handing over their 'family silver' . Just lots of cooperation in energy technology, nuclear power, natural gas, automobiles, hi-tech development, e-commerce and 5G.
