‘When we think about the economic attractiveness of this or that mining operation, we clearly need to think about the cash cost once its in operation, but just as importantly, we need to think about what it cost and how long it took to get into operation.
A few weeks ago, B2 Gold announced an updated feasibility on its Gramalote project in Colombia. It looks pretty good, but it's been a while coming. It was based on an MRE that required 270,000m of drilling over 10 years. They are planning to produce 2.3m ounces over an 11 year mine life, which will need $740m to build. Let's say it gets up and running by 2030, then thats 22 years from first work, and probably not much change from $1bn when all said and done.
If things go to plan, we might get Pepas to MRE for 6-7000m of drilling in 1 year. Granted, it wont be a Gramalote, but then nor should it cost $740m to build.’
