Iranian official taunts Trump over oil price
The speaker of Iran's parliament has poked fun at Donald Trump's threat to block Iranian ports, posting a photo of gas prices around the White House.
"Enjoy the current pump figures. With the so-called 'blockade', Soon you'll be nostalgic for $4-$5 gas," Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, who was part of the failed peace talks on Saturday, said online.
Oil prices have surged over the duration of the war, propelled by Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on energy infrastructure in Gulf nations in an attempt to pressure the US and Israel into a ceasefire.
The price hit nearly $120 for a barrel of the benchmark Brent, a four-year high, in the first two weeks of the war, but fell to below the significant $100 threshold after the announcement of the ceasefire last week. The price rose back over $100 overnight on the back of Trump's blockade threats.
