US will revive full sanctions on Iranian oil this weekend
A 30-day waiver on Iranian oil sanctions - made last month to relieve pressure on global energy supply - will expire this weekend.
But while the US blockades the key waterway of the Strait of Hormuz, where one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied gas is shipped in normal times, the Treasury has confirmed it will not be extended.
The waiver, which was issued on 20 March, allowed around 140 million barrels of oil to reach global markets, Treasury secretary Scott Bessent said last month.
That waiver is set to expire on 19 April.
Here's what the Treasury said in full:
"Treasury is moving aggressively with Economic Fury, maintaining maximum pressure on Iran. Financial institutions should be on notice that the department is leveraging the full range of available tools and authorities and is prepared to deploy secondary sanctions against foreign financial institutions that continue to support Iran's activities. The short-term authorisation permitting the sale of Iranian oil already stranded at sea is set to expire in a few days and will not be renewed."
