It was reported this morning on Bloomburg that Apple is breaking it's long term arrangement with Intel in favour of making it's own chips and that new Iphones would have very different new features.

In fairness he could not have been expected to know that the idiot Trump was going to start a trade war with China causing Apple and other US companies massive grief.

The area allegedly chosen is very interesting and not too surprising. The factory is one part I believe there is also a design and research facility included and looking around the area there are lots of aerospace professionals in the area (Bae) the 'Silicon Valley' (IQE+) around Newport and Versarien in Cheltenham.

Depending on who you purchase your electricity from you may also be able to to get a two way car to house connection so you become part of the virtual power plant. Essentially the car battery becomes the emergency electricity supply in blackouts or a 'mini peaker plant' charge up on cheap rates during the night ans sell power to the grid at times of high demand. Recently the grid actually paid EV owners to take excess power.

Greetings all Wasa seems to have started something with his sweepstake predictions. I will hold off until I know the details of Teslas battery plans due to be divulged in a virtual presentation very shortly what will be said has been widely and in some cases wildly speculated about for several weeks,
What I expect will nothing short of earth shattering. My predictions are not one new battery but at least 2 and maybe even 3 one will be a new Nickel Aluminium (possibly with a very small amount of Cobalt but hopefully not) million mile high performance battery with tabless electrodes and larger format it maybe cylindrical perhaps 40mm x 70mm with a dry coated electrode it might just possibly be prismatic instead, either way it will be significantly cheaper and easier to produce than current 2170 batteries. The second is a Lithium Iron phosphate battery that will be used in lower performance vehicles and battery storage for power walls and grid size batteries this will be a really cheap battery to produce. Last there may just be a new solid state battery with a glass electrolite which will have have outstanding specifications.
Oh and there should also be information on how the company will ramp up production of batteries from about 35GWh a year to 2TWh per year by 2030; and whether Tesla will be getting into mining to ensure supplies of necessary raw materials in particular Nickel and Lithium.

It is a very interesting an intriguing thought however I can see some problems. I am sure it will be possible to build a highly efficient very energy dense battery with brilliant cycle life using such materials. The big problem is that Platinum and Palladium are rare and very expensive and are likely to remain so (Lithium is not rare and production can be scaled up when the need arises) so unless only a minuscule amount of Palladium and Platinum is required (which may be so) these batteries are going to fall at the first hurdle of volume production COST.

Mr Musk also said they might need to get into the mining business, he has very big plans that are going to need a hell of a lot of Nickel. Perhaps someone should drop him an email.

An investors virtual Battery Day presentation going to be held in early June followed by an open presentation when lockdown is lifted. Anyone got any ideas what will be revealed?
My guess a million mile dry electrode battery in larger format to the 2170 maybe as much a 5070 made possible with Maxwell technology and tabless electrodes. To be manufactured by Tesla and the pathway to a terrawatt hour battery factory.
Details of the Lithium Iron phosphate battery CATL will be building for Tesla in China.
Details of Virtual Power Plants and Vehicle to Grid charging and the plan to create a lot of money in the electricity market by storing cheap off peak power in batteries (mega packs powerwalls and car batteries) and selling it back at peak times.

If you are interested in investing in new technology particularly batteries you really need to be looking in Nickel which forms a much greater proportion of current Lithium-ion batteries than Lithium does. Just a quick look will show that Nickel production is just picking up after a period of depressed prices, producers in the Philippines and Indonesia are curtailing exports and Lithium demand for batteries is about to sky rocket.
I like this company because I believe it is well placed in a new technology industry with massive potential and that the CEO has a a lot of skin in the game and a lot of experience on commercialising new technology and running a business.

Versarien does have a partership with a battery company sadly not Tesla. The post you show is quite old Tesla has been using 2170 battery cells for a couple of years. Tesla will be having a battery investor presentation should have had it already but guess what Covid19 knocked it back it back. There has been a lot of speculation regarding Tesla batteries in particular the million mile battery imo this will be a nickel cobalt aluminium battery made with dry electrodes probably with their new patented tabless terminals which they will build themselves in their own factories in vast numbers because it will be - very durable and long lasting - capable of very fast charging and discharging - much easier to manufacture and finally considerabaly cheaper to manufacture probably significantly below 100 dollars per KWhour. If so game set and match to Tesla and not just for electric vehicles; at battery day I expect announcements on virtual power plants using solar panels and power walls and EV to grid technology.

It would appear that several countries have woken up to supply chain difficulties caused by the present Covid19 pandemic and over reliance on Asian particularly Chinese suppliers nothing seems to be more front and centre than medical supplies and high tech electronics. Surely this has got to be good for IQE; lets just hope they get their sales department unto high gear sharpish.

This info looked a bit awry to me unless they are expecting radically different battery chemistry. Lithium only makes up about 3% of a lithium ion battery whilst nickel makes up about 40 - 45% so I would expect global demand for nickel to be much more than 109% increase when lithium increase is 950%

A lot of stuff out and about on Youtube concerning Teslas new Nickel Cobalt Aluminium battery including a patented manufacturing process for a single crystal NCA electrode. This battery has been in the pipeline and talked about / speculated about for quite a while.
All we need to know is NCA chemistry. Means lots of Nickel is going to be needed
Tesla will almost certainly manufacture the battery themselves instead of using Panasonic LG Chem or CATL.
Battery will last in good condition with minimal loss of capacity for 1 million miles of use and or 20 years.
My speculation here this will not only go into Teslas cars but will also be used for \powerwalls and grid size batteries as well.

China is pretty much back up and running.
Where will demand come from for their products may be more of a problem. Even without Covid19 traditional legacy car makers are facing a massive problem with electrification they are really struggling to get their act together on this, collectively they sold upwards of 15% fewer cars in China last year and this year is likely to be even worse. Thankfully JLP also produce the metals the new electrified kid on the block needs. Also worth remembering that all the stuff we produce works out cheaper than the metal that has to be mined.

Good but not great news. 7.5 GWH is not going to make that many cars depending on battery size maybe between 40,000 and 60,000 cars.
The biggest bottle neck in the EV system is batteries there is just not enough manufacturing capacity to make enough.

Has anyone else been looking at the share prices of legacy ICE vehicle manufacturers compared to Tesla?
I saw a you tube posting saying that Tesla is now worth more than GM and Ford combined and the value of Tesla has from about a third of the US motor vehicle industry to nearly three quarters in the last 6 months.
The writing is definitely on the wall and it don't look good for the ICE motor vehicle industry.
All of which makes me happy to be holding here because electric vehicles currently and probably for the foreseeable future will have some form of Lithium ion battery, now these batteries do contain Lithium but not very much but Nickel they contain loads of that. Counting up the expansion necessary for EV's is hard but Tesla will be having a battery day now probably mid May and I shall be very interested, there will almost certainly be announcements concerning anew battery (the million mile battery) probably with a dry electrolite: and how they will scale battery production (not only for EV's but also for grid scale battery storage and also domestic battery storage for homes) to 1 terra watt hour (35x what they make now).

There are several big flies in this ointment. Do Hospitals do still have laundry facilities or do they contract out washing/cleaning to outside contractors?
Regarding previous posts the reason the PPE is disposable and imported has a lot to do with labour costs in India, Babgladesh, Vietnam etc. and governments usually Tory penny pinching.
I do not know if they still do but heard at least one 1 Hospital was sending theatre instruments to India to be sterilised and repacked beacuse it was cheaper.

What you do not mention is how many of these deaths were of very elderly people with underlying serious health conditions. I do not want to diminish the seriousness of the situation and each of those deaths will be a tragedy for their families; but if you look up how many deaths in each age group occur 'normally' every month I think the 'extra numbers' are relatively low. The serious problem is that that these people become very ill and require hospitalisation and intensive at the end of life instead of passing away at home or in hospices or non intensive care in hospital.
