Its sort of traditional buy the rumour sell the news. It could be argued that there have been so many leaks that anything to be announced today is already priced in. I think there may be one or two surprises and perhaps some surprising announcements maybe another factory in Europe and another one in China. Perhaps more battery fabrication facilities in various countries maybe even here in UK.

What about Teslas other vehicles in particular the Semi which will require 10 times the battery power of a model 3 and which Mr Musk wants to be producing in limited numbers by the end of this year. The Cybertruck will probably have twice the battery power of the Model 3 due to start production mid 2021. Then there is the Power business he wants to become an energy supplier / optimiser that means lots of grid storage and also lots of Power-walls.

I don't see this, Geoff Dahn Teslas battery guru reckons that Cobalt is not needed in Lithium-ion batteries and is one of the factors making them liable to combust. I will not be surprised if Cobalt is absent from Teslas new battery due out today and I am pretty sure it wont be needed in the Lithium-ion ferrous phosphate battery. Cobalt is old hat its on the way out on cost and ethical grounds.

I expect battery day to go down in history as the day the ICE car died.
I expect that Mr Musk will announce a new Tesla battery a larger format using Lithium-ion nickel aluminium chemistry I do not think it will hugely more energy dense what it will be is a hell of a lot cheaper to produce - larger format less cells required, less casing material less weight, cell to pack less complexity. In addition it will have tabless dry coated electrodes thus cutting down complexity and and greatly reducing cost of manufacture by speeding up production lines and reducing the space required for those lines.
I expect Mr Musk will outline how Tesla will build this new battery themselves and how he intends to ramp up production by orders of magnitude so that he can produce millions of EVs every year (circa 5 million a year by 2025).
We know he will also be using Lithium-ion phosphate batteries for lower cost vehicles produced in China these batteries have lower energy density and range suitable for the Chinese market. They are unlikely to be suitable for long range vehicles and higher power vehicles such as the Semi-truck, Cybertruck,new Roadster and performance model S X 3 and Y. Until now Tesla has been constrained by lack of battery supply with the new battery this will no longer apply.

The use of lasers in autonomous vehicles is much trumpeted by some of the companies using WAYMO springs to mind. However there are several very big problems with it.
1) The areas where these autonomous vehicles operate are geo-fenced meaning the cars only work in the areas that have been expensively mapped by engineeers prior to letting the cars loose. They will NOT work in un-mapped areas.
2) Apparently these systems are very adversely affected by falling snow and rain (neither of these is much of a problem in Phoenix Arizona where Waymo operate.
3) The systems are currently very expensive estimates vary but 100000 dollars per vehicle or more are out there (not including the vehicle
The alternative system - cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar (already installed in every Tesla vehicle) will when completed be capable of driving autonomously anywhere. The AI running the system is greatly dependent on data Tesla has over 3 billion miles of data now collected in numerous countries in all sorts of weather (Waymo several million miles).
In short I am not invested here for this application of VSCELS, I am quite hopeful for lots of sales in facial recognition for smart phones though.

If you look up the figures on Hydrogen for road transport they are awful batteries are orders of magnitude more efficient check up with Ewan McTurk (pluglifeTV). Hydrogen powered jet ircraft may well be a goerh but not quite yet.
Teslas battery day is next week and there should be some good news regarding the Semi-truck which Mr Musk wants to start building this year dependent on suitable high power low cost batteries.

EV production from Tesla - The man at the top has said he is going to grow Tesla by 50% a year and he will be very very upset at if they only get 40% growth. He has often missed on his time lines but generally seems to do exactly what he has said. By 2025 I think Tesla alone will be producing around 5 million vehicles a year. the Fremont Factory can probably produce around 600000 cars a year, Shanghai 1 300000 Shanghai 2 just about completed and ramping up production another 300000. Berlin under construction and with plenty of room to expand 400000 starting maybe by Q2 next year. Austin just started ground-works this is where the Cybertuck will be built and may well come on line very quickly due to no paint shop and no heavy presses being required (and a rumored 700000 pre-orders) there is also a lot of room to expand. Giga factory Nevada currently not producing vehicles but loads of space to do so. Tesla proved itself able to build a factory from bare ground to initial production in less than 12 months it has around 13billion in cash to fund new factories so keep you ears open for announcements of more factories to come.

On Teslanomics apparently Giga metals and Tesla are in talks regarding sustainable nickel production.
Someone on our BOD needs to be talking to Mr Musk pronto.
From memory the Giga Metals potential mine in British Columbia on First nation lands in the middle of nowhere with no infrastructure and is at least 12 years away production.

Prepare to be surprised.
What I am expecting from battery day.
1) Tesla has a new process for making battery cells based on dry electrodes (from Maxwell technology)
2) Tabless electrodes invented by Tesla much improving flow of electrons into and out of battery helping the battery stay cool.
3) Teslas own battery production facility showing how the above batteries will be made.
4) Some indication of how Tesla will move battery production up to multi terra-wat hours annually.
5) Perhaps the most important - how much these new batteries will cost when produced at scale my guess at least 20% cheaper than current batteries.
It should go without saying these batteries will be good for a million miles with only minimal degradation and will probably contain a lot of nickel and very little if any cobalt.

There is another point to emphasise regarding car batteries just because they have some degradation from years of useage does not mean you take it out of the car and throw it away. Typically it will still have 75% of its capacity and can be used in stationary storage systems for many years before it finally needs to be retired and hopefully recycled.

He talks a good story but there are some flaws. They have just spent 10 billion Euro on software development to get the new electric Golf working properly and capable of being sold.
They may be able to produce one and a half million electric vehicles i..e build the bodies but where will the batteries come from? I seem to recall that they have plans to build a battery factory in Europe together with Daimler but they were a bit shy on revealing details of how many batteries it would produce and by when.
Personally I hope they can do what they are saying but and its a big but are they able to do so, the legacy auto makers have been spouting this stuff for a long time but always seem woefully short on execution.

Graham institutional investors will invest in whatever they can within their terms of reference Ark Invest has a disruption fund and invests in companies like Tesla and Ultima companies which they believe will be very disruptive. They got a lot of stick a few months ago for putting out a very bullish $5000 per share on Tesla whilst selling Tesla stock. A closer look revealed that no share can be more than 10% of the fund so they were selling Tesla stock to re-balance the portfolio obviously making a substantial profit on the investment.

I have been retired for some time and investing is only a hobby for me,though it must be said a very lucrative hobby this year. I do think there will be tears before bedtime with this market anything going up this much this quick can also move very swiftly in the opposite direction perhaps listening to Warren Buffet may be prudent "Be greedy when others are fearful and fearful when others are greedy."

Anyone still shorting Tesla at this juncture must be crazy. I think that the shorts covering may well be responsible for the latest uptick. After the split there may well be a surge in demand for the lower priced shares which could well push the price even higher. Exciting times,

If you want dividends you are in the wrong place. This is now a much larger company and is investing the money it could pay in dividends to become a much larger, much stronger company. Dividends will be come along eventually.

How much Nickel will Tesla require - quite a lot if they scale at Mr Musks forecast. Elon has stated that he will be disappointed at less than 35% compound growth and is planning to grow 50% a year. Just on the cars alone there is apparently 40Kgs of Nickel in the battery so when his new factories kick in (Shanghai nearly done, Berlin coming along at an amazing rate and Austin just started but full steam ahead) hes going to be making aver a million cars a year so that 40 million Kgs just for the batteries. The cybertruck due to come out at the end of next year (will probably be sooner) has a stainless steel body ( stainless around 10% Nickel) and there are now apparently over 700.000 pre-orders. Then there is the Semi which will have a massive battery 1 Megawat H battery coming in late this year (maybe) in limited numbers but ramping up when Austin is completed; there are a lot of orders for this they are bit coy on exactly how many.
This is just Teslas vehicle requirement then there are all the powerwalls and Megapacks they will be building.
Tesla has 8 billion dollars of cash in the bank so could easily afford some cash to develop Horizonte in return for a long term supply contract at a mutually acceptable price.

Jeff Dahn is Teslas battery researcher at Dalhousie University he has been been big into Lithium-ion battery research for many years and has headed teams of battery researchers for years. He appears to be of the opinion that Cobalt is not required in Lithium-ion batteries and it may make them more likely to combust see The limiting Factor on Youtube for chapter and verse.

So how come Amazon is great growth stock and Tesla is not?
The EU and China and lots of states in the USA are doing all they can to encourage EVs and renewable energy to be really useful both these technologies require huge, efficient, long lasting and above all cheap batteries. Elon Musk is Mr Battery his companies use more than half the Lithium-ion batteries in the world and he cannot get enough of them, he has even started making his own batteries; I think the 22nd September will be a bombshell day when Musk will outline in detail how his new battery performs, what his new battery will cost and how he will manufacture them in multiple terrawat hour quantities. If this is not hgrowth I don't know what is.

I am a holder but more Musketeer than millionaire.
Looking at what analysts say you could be forgiven for thinking this was just a very overpriced bubble stock. I have been looking at youtubers mostly serious Tesla fanboys and associated other posts but with battery technology insights. If you have time take a look at TMIO (The Market is Open) Hyperchange, The Limiting Factor, Solving the Money Problem and Chicken Genius Singapore. I suspect that the youtubers are better informed and more likely to be correct. Tesla is only just starting the addressable transport market is huge and they only have half of one percent of the car market. The software has hardly been looked at Autonomous EVs will be huge and Tesla is in pole position on this. Batteries who knows what will be announced on 22nd September I am of the opinion it could so significant that the current share price will look like the bargain of the century.
Speculating here the new battery will be manufactured by Tesla it will last over a million miles or 4000 plus cycles it will be more energy dense (probably not a lot more) the killer will be tabless dry electrodes from Maxwell Technology which will mean the battery will be much easier and very much cheaper to manufacture and also capable of charging at a high rate. It may also be more resilient and capable of being charged and discharged from empty to full and back to empty with minimal buffer. The future is bright its Tesla powered.

I'm a Musketeer unfortunately not a millionaire but a lot better off since buying in. Analysts are mostly still valuing this as a car company - even if that were so its a car company with about half of 1% of the addressable market so there is plenty of room for expansion. This is a technology company a software company and a power company and its only just getting started. Going forward the road will be bumpy the share has been and will continue to be volatile. Good luck with it - waiting to buy the lows sounds good but may not work very well here.
