Hi Rotherby, your story made me chuckle as for sure when your parents come from harder lives, it's these moments that as you mature make you realise how lucky you are as they struggled so much to give us better lives. I wouldn't change a thing about either of mine who sadly are gone far too young and a constant reminder that time is so precious with our loved ones and to cherish every single moment :-)
That train journey ended up with an amazing experience, when we got to the town we spent another hour or two I think it was walking up steep mountain steps waiting for the sun to come up in a large procession of people as the temple opened at dawn .
As the sun came up, everyone in the crowd started singing some hypnotic religious chant, the woman singing some verses and the men others, it was pretty insane and magical and made every single moment of that train journey worthwhile... a priceless experience.
And you know what, my dad explained why he'd booked those cheap tickets years later when I teased him about it. He'd wanted us to go through some pain from our easier lives to fully appreciate getting to the temple just like the first time he made the trip with his parents, he said if we'd taken the posh train with the fancy seats and facilities it wouldn't have been as magical at the end.
As for Shaun and those power players on our board, they may well all be gone in a decade but if they do their job correctly then they'll have set up the next Newcrest in some ways and some other perhaps younger shining stars of the future will come in to make their names and push it further I'm sure ;-)
And you know what, this conversation is a reminder of how we've all shared so many amazing stories and experiences in the last few years, even meeting up in person over a few drinks. It's never just about the destination, it's about the journey too...
