BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to return to Bangladesh in mid-November after 17 years of exile in the United Kingdom, party sources have said.

Several advisers to the BNP leader and diplomats based in Dhaka confirmed his planned return.

"After many ifs and buts, it is now clear that our leader is eager to come back home in mid-November. He may travel to Dhaka from London between 10 and 20 November," an adviser close to Tarique told The Business Standard.

In recent months, Tarique met two influential diplomats, including the United States acting ambassador to Bangladesh Tracey Ann Jacobson – in London, when he reiterated his intention to return to Bangladesh.

Tarique has been living in Kingston, a south-western suburb of London, during his years of exile.

His plan for return was also confirmed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir during a recent interview with TBS. He said Tarique Rahman would return home soon, though the exact date had not been finalised.

According to party sources, he is expected to fly from London's Heathrow International Airport on a commercial flight, accompanied by at least two advisers and leaders of the UK BNP.

While it’s quiet…..saw a hectare of building land for sale in central phulbari earlier this week it was about £100k,so I just ran a few calcs on that basis,obviously not taking into account compensation etc if all the land needed for the phulbari project was valued at building land prices the whole 5k hectares would be worth £500mln……..now there’s a lot of eventualities to wrap that site up for development but you can see why it’s so attractive having potentially $20bln of overburden and $50-80 bln in resources not including the energy park and power plants 😉

Generation capacity now a bane

According to the Energy Division, Bangladesh has the installed power generation capacity of a whopping 30,000 MW – almost double the demand in several months of the year.

The demand for power implies that half the power plants sit idle as consumption drops, especially in winter.

Despite the situation, the government continues to import electricity keeping the power plants unutilised.

Energy expert Prof Shamsul Alam said it is true the earlier government engaged the private sector randomly for power generation to boost their pockets.

“But the next one should sort out the crisis. The government can decrease imported electricity rather than increase local public plant generation,” he suggested.

There was a little mention in the video that if the coal resources had been further south they would have started extraction years ago…..similar to infrastructure issues in UK,Hs2 blew the budget and ended in Birmingham,Scotland has all the wind power and crap infrastructure to bring it south………I think Phulbari in 2026 will be in the middle of a new regeneration of the northern areas of Bangladesh including Teesta and it’s associated billions of dollars of development and energy requirements
