Dhaka, Bangladesh — Bangladesh’s economy has entered a deep recession, leaving investment, employment and poverty levels at alarming levels. The implementation of the Annual Development Program (ADP) in the 2024-25 fiscal year has fallen to just 68 percent, the lowest in history. Development spending has also slowed in the first two months of the current 2025-26 fiscal year, with five ministries yet to make any expenditure.

Private sector investment has declined, bank credit growth has fallen below 7 percent, and new business or factory openings have almost come to a standstill. According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), GDP growth in the last fiscal year was just 3.69 percent, the lowest in five years. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal year to 4.9 percent from 5.4 percent.

This economic crisis has had a huge impact on the lives of ordinary people. Employment has declined, and rising inflation has reduced people’s purchasing power. According to the World Bank, 3 million people in the country may be plunged into extreme poverty again. The poverty rate has increased from 18.7 percent to 21.2 percent, and PPRC research says that about 40 million people are in multidimensional poverty.

I tend to swerve anything Rizwana is on a podium for but on this occasion it’s related to the Bangla China joint past efforts and more importantly future joint programmes……..Rizwana is a proper tree licker but on many interviews has admitted fossil fuel is here to stay in bangla,even admitting domestic coal is better for the country than import fuel….so she’s basically saying to the Chinese provide feasibility studies and environmental considerations??……now I would say that probably relates more to fossil fuel energy development than windmills and solar!!………

The Bangladesh Petroleum Institute (BPI) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) with five reputed institutions as a historic step for collaboration in training, research, education and technical development in the fuel and mineral resources sector of Bangladesh. The agreement titled “Cooperation in Energy Research and Capacity Building” was signed today, Saturday, October 18, 2025 at the BPI headquarters.

The institutions associated with the BPI through this memorandum are: Department of Geology and Mining, University of Rajshahi, Institute of Mining, Mineralogy and Metallurgy, BCSIR, Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Engineering (PMRE), BUET, Bangladesh, Gas & Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla), and CodersTrust Limited. This multifunctional collaboration will play a crucial role in enhancing the essential human resource and technical capabilities for the country's fuel security and sustainable development.

Honorable Secretary of Fuel and Mineral Resources Department Mohammad Saiful Islam was present as the chief guest at the program. Honorable Chairman of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and Secretary of Government Md. Amin Ul Ahsan was present as a special guest. Director General of BPI Khenchan presided over the program and signed the memorandum of agreement in favor of BPI.

Professor Dr. Younus Ahmed Khan, Chairman of Geology and Mineral Department of Rajshahi University; CEO of Coderstrust Limited, MD SHAMSUL HAQUE; Member of BCSIR Mr. Abul Fatah Md. Article in financial express this morning about the difficulties with road repairs in Bangladesh,90% of materials for repairs are imported!……so costs and delays are inevitable,what’s that got to do with anything?……I’m getting at the Teesta project….if materials have to be imported for road structural repairs leading to increased costs and delays that’s going to be unacceptable to the Chinese to develop Teesta,they will want materials sourced as close to this development as possible,I will let you fill in the gaps 😉

Fouzel was weighing up the options for coal extraction only a few weeks ago…….this surely puts the nails in the coffin of deep pit mining……surely if everything is affected slowly above the mined areas land sinking,houses crumbling it’s more feasible to open pit the whole sites,extracting 90%+ of the reserves and getting relocations/compensation done swiftly and efficiently……..👍

Severe land subsidence has been reported in 13 villages, including Patrapara, adjacent to the Barapukuria coal mine in Parbatipur, Dinajpur, as a result of underground coal extraction.

Due to coal extraction at the Barapukuria mine, houses in Patrapara village have been experiencing tremors, land subsidence, and cracks in various places.

On Thursday, the Village Homestead Protection Committee held a press conference at Patrapara Bazar under Hamidpur Union of the upazila, alleging that these problems were caused by coal mining activities.

The villagers demanded compensation and immediate remedial measures for the damages. They also warned that if their demands are not met within a week, they would launch a movement.
